Duck Boots Versus Doc Martens: The Ultimate Battle

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Skidmore chapter.

The ultimate debate. Some wear Duck (or Bean) boots and others wear Doc Martens. Some wear both, but most have a preference. The two come with very different, but significant histories. Doc Martens come from the 1950s Youth Revolution while Bean Boots were the first product sold by L.L. Bean in 1912 Maine. One evokes images of cigarettes and punk music while the other evokes images of golden retrievers and fireside cuddles. One is preppy while the other is punk. Despite their differences, both have a very loyal following. I, being a massive fan of the Duck/Bean Boot have brought my suitemate Ilie on to tell her side of the argument. Here we go.

The Argument for Doc Martens:

Her Campus: What’re the practical elements of the Doc Marten?

Ilie: Comfortable, low-key sexy, they make you feel like a badass, they can be worn any season, they go with literally anything, and you could also stomp on any man’s heart.

Her Campus: What are your favorite ways to wear the Doc Marten?

Ilie: With cuffed jeans, with floral or lace dresses, or with jogger sweats .

Her Campus: Why Doc Martens over Bean Boots?

Ilie: They’re more stylish, they go with more things, they’re trendy, they’re a better statement of your personality depending on print. Bean Boots are just Bean Boots. Those are for the snow and if you spray your Docs then they become waterproof.. so there.

The Argument for Bean Boots:

Her Campus: What’re the practical elements of the Bean Boot?

Emma: They’re completely waterproof, they keep your feet so warm, you can adjust the size by tightening the laces, there are several different styles of Bean Boot that work for different weather, and they last forever.

Her Campus: What are your favorite ways to wear Bean Boots?

Emma: With thick leggings, patterned socks, and a sweater or with skinny jeans, a collared shirt, and a sweater.

Her Campus: Why Bean Boots over Doc Martens?

Emma: Bean Boots are classic. They represent the changing Northeast seasons and collegiate style. My grandma had Bean Boots, my mom had Bean Boots, and now I have Bean Boots. They’re timeless and are a staple in the closet of every Northeast Liberal Arts college student.
