Four Nontraditional Ways to De-stress

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJU chapter.

What happens when running, being a yogi, and attempting to meditate doesn’t work as a de-stress method for your soul? If you’re someone like me, you’ve often had to look outside of the box, and find some nontraditional ways to de-stress. I’ve compiled a list of four, simple ways to calm down after a stressful exam, a fight with a boyfriend, or an argument with your roomies:

1. Cook: Chopping, slicing, and sautéing are the perfect ways to calm down and concentrate your feelings on a task that will end in a delicious meal. Juggling two internships this summer, I constantly wanted to plop onto my couch after a long day. I began forcing myself to cook fresh meals after work, and I instantly felt better. Cooking brings happiness, whether it’s making a meal for your friends or baking a single cupcake for yourself.

2. Paint: It’s proven that artistic expression can bring about relaxation and get the creative juices flowing. Painting is a great way to unwind while also spending time with friends. It’s especially fun if you add a little wine. Check out Painting with a Twist in Center City!

3. Bathe: Every girl knows that there is nothing better than a long, relaxing bubble bath. But did you know, there are actually a variety of things you can add to your bath? Check out these ideas: http://www.picklee.com/2014/02/03/12-surprising-things-to-add-to-your-bath-diy-bath-recipes/

4. Organize: Washing dishing, reorganizing furniture, and cleaning a messy room can decrease both clutter in your life and clutter in your mind. Whenever I’m struggling to sleep, I get out of bed and try to focus my attention on one of these tasks. Works like a charm!
