The Cocktail Crackdown: How to Drink Without Destroying Your Diet

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJU chapter.

Alcohol. Oh, alcohol-the ultimate love affair. Even if you are a kale-drinking yogi like myself, there is something about the crisp fall air that makes bellying up to a bar and sipping a beer (or five) seem quite irresistible.

Being conscious of your health doesn’t always mean you have to give up drinking entirely. It’s okay to have a couple of drinks ever so often, and by swapping a few ingredients here and there you can switch out empty calories for lighter options that, not only, your waistline but your dentist will appreciate.

Here are my 5 rules of drinking with benefits. Take notes ladies!

1.Seltzer over soda.

When it comes to mixers, grabbing a soda or sugary juice seems to come naturally. Jack and Coke’s, Vodka Red Bull, Gin and Tonic’s. You’re just adding a splash so it can’t be too bad right? Wrong. These chasers are anything but natural and are packed with loads of sugar and calories that are the main causes of weight gain and hangovers. Sub out these sugary mixers with club soda for a drink that won’t leave you hurting the next day. And at 99 cents a bottle, your bank account will thank you too!

2. A little citrus goes a long way.

You’ve stocked up on bottles of seltzer and are ready for the weekend! However, using club soda as a mixer may take some getting used to. My favorite trick for adding flavor to my drinks is adding a squeeze of fresh lemons or limes! The citrus adds the right amount of brightness and flavor that will make you forget about that sugary soda.

3.Natural sweeteners, always.

Many times, our cocktails are made with sugary simple syrups and processed mixers. Try using natural sweeteners, like agave nectar, to get that perfect hint of sweetness and simplicity.

4. Quality, not quantity.

When it comes to beer, I typically choose something that is a little higher quality than the cheapest offering. It may be $2 more expensive, but this way I end up drinking less, due to the higher alcohol content and quality, so I end up saving calories and money!

5.Slow and steady wins the race.

Remember it’s a marathon, not a race, and no one wants to be the drunkest girl at the party. Enjoy your drink, enjoy your friends, and enjoy not ruining your healthy diet!
