We Think We’re Connected But Are We Really?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJSU chapter.

It was early this year when I realized we connect so much on Social Media that we’re not really connecting.

In other words when you scroll through your timeline and see everyone you know updating the world on how their life is going, you’re not actually getting an update on how they’re doing.

You feel like you are because you probably see them post everyday. However, relying on social media to tell you how their doing, you’re losing a connection.

This is why we don’t make as many phone calls or verbal communication anymore. We don’t exactly know how to call someone and see how their doing anymore.

This lack of communication skills is also affecting our success in the workforce.

Me and some of my other family members did an experiment to see who we were actually really connected with. I decided to delete my old Snapchat over the summer because I just needed time alone. It is amazing how all the people you assumed you had connection with, don’t actually reach out to you at all.

Don’t believe me? Try it for yourself.

But we can all do better to change this pattern. Social mediums do not have to control us.

You never really know when someone you love is doing much worse than what you thought. Before that relationship is gone forever, see how they’re really doing.

So I encourage you this holiday season to personally call or make plans with someone you need to connect with.

In other words try not to look at your phone so much during Christmas Dinner. Hope it helps! Have a great season.

My name is Tiona, I go by T and I have a passion for writing and informing people on issues and media in the world. I'm from Sacramento, CA and I'm in my 3rd year studying PR and Dance. I love old school music, traveling, dancing, and making a difference. My favorite color is yellow, I love basketball, and fashion/beauty. I'm a very straight foward and lowkey person. After college I'd like to get my Cosmetology license and also go on to graduate school to study fashion and/or performing arts.

She's often watching YouTube videos on D.I.Y projects or hair care, but majority of the time she's watching Parks and Rec episodes while pretending to do homework. In the midst of all that homework dodging she's also casually planning her dream wedding.
