Something that I can too often relate to is if I am in college studying what I’m supposed to be doing for the rest of my life. You know those people that knew exactly what they wanted to be when they grew up since they were toddlers? They always wanted to be a doctor or lawyer and followed through with it? Well I’m here to tell you I am not that person. And sometimes I’m even jealous of those people.
When I was younger I wanted to be a singer, dancer, or end up in the music industry. Guess what? I am no longer interested in doing most of those things. Well then you think, duh, of course you don’t wanna live out your pipe dreams that you had when you were little. But that’s not exactly the point I’m trying to make.
There are people that know exactly what they want and go for the more safe and common jobs that pay well. Then there are the dreamers and the artistic folk and I fall more into this category.
You see I grew up very, very creative. I was able to do multiple things and if it had anything to do with the arts I pretty much knew what I was doing. I wrote music, read it, played piano, created movies, sang in front of crowds, danced on teams, loved writing and English, was able to draw, and sketched my own fashion designs. Creativity was my middle name.
As I got older of course I adapted to this fast paced world we live in and began to become interested in other things. But the one thing I promised myself is that if I was going to choose something, it was going to be something that I was happy with or interested in doing. I refuse to be miserable years down the road in a field that I’m now stuck in and have to go all the way back to school and start over. For me, it is better to start with something you love and and work your way from the ground up.
When I got to college my major was English/Creative Writing. Let me tell you, it’s been a journey since then. I changed my major at least three times. It was always stressful because I couldn’t stand the people that knew exactly what they wanted to do. I wanna do so many things and have so much to offer this world that I could never possibly choose one thing. So I could never sit still in what I was doing. But the truth is as long as you have a degree, you are already winning.
I know family members and advisors who have told me they started out with a BA in a certain degree and ended up completely changing directions with their lives. So it’s not completely about finding something you are going to do with the rest of life because that’s intimidating. And they train us to believe that we need to have our minds made up by the time we graduate but that is not the case.
We don’t know which direction our lives are going to take us. We may think that we’re where we’re supposed to be and end up completely wrong. We could also be selling ourselves short and able to accomplish more than we can imagine.
My point is, you have your whole life ahead of you. This is the first day of the rest of your life. Use it wisely. Accomplish everything that you possibly can and have no regrets. If you’re unsure about a major just know that it is better to choose something you believe you can excel in rather than choosing something that someone else was successful in or because there is pressure to choose one based on what society thinks.
Do you and you’ll be great. Because no one else can do you better than you.
