Things International Students Think Their First Week of College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Siena chapter.

1. THIS IS SO COOL!

There are so many new things to do everywhere! Even going to the supermarket is a whole new experience.

2. Peanut butter? What’s that?

People in the U.S. don’t realize that they are the only country with peanut butter. That’s really not a thing anywhere else…

3. What does _____ mean?

Especially if you come from a country where English is not the official language, you will find yourself asking this a lot.

4. I just wanna go home

Home is just too far! You’ll get to that point where you just want to be back and hang out with your friends and family. Snapchat and Instagram are mostly to blame for this. You really look forward to Christmas and summer break.

5. I don’t know how to say it in English…

There are SO MANY expressions that just can’t be translated into English.

6. I really wanna eat (insert dish from your country)

You’ll get to that point in which you just want your mom’s food, and there is no way that you can find something even similar to it in any restaurant around you.

7. “OMG I LOVE YOUR ACCENT”

I know I have an accent, and I’m very self-conscious about it. It also gets annoying after the 50th time that you are being told this.
