D.I.Y. Cold Brew Coffee

by Nicole Carey

As college students, we basically become dependent on caffeine to keep us functioning- whether that means soda, energy drinks, or coffee. My love for coffee grew even stronger throughout college as I sampled different drinks, made multiple Starbucks runs, and became a barista myself.

I’ve gained a lot of coffee knowledge this past couple of years, and I’m gonna share it with you lovely followers. I’m going to teach you how to make your own cold brew coffee at home.

First, cold brew is completely different from iced coffee. Cold brew is brewed for up to 24 hours. It also has a creamier, more flavorful taste than iced coffee since it is brewed for a longer period of time. It is also less acidic than regular coffee. I am hardcore obsessed with cold brew, so here are the steps and ingredients to make it!

What You’ll Need:

  1. Pitcher
  2. Coffee grinder
  3. Whole bean coffee
  4. Coffee filters
  5. Rubber bands

You don’t necessarily need a coffee grinder, but if you do get coffee pre-ground, you need to make sure it’s course ground. I love grinding my own coffee though because I think it keeps it fresher.

Cold brew coffee is extremely simple to make…

  1. Take two filters and fill them with course ground coffee. Make sure you are doubling up on the filters so they don’t rip or tear, because the last thing you want is your coffee grinds spilling everywhere. You will do this twice. Ultimately, you’ll be using four coffee filters total.
  2. Once you have filled your coffee filters, rubber band them and put them in the pitcher.
  3. Then, the pitcher just needs to be filled with water and refrigerated for 12-24 hours.

That’s it! You just made your own cold brew coffee! You can add your favorite flavors, but make sure after two days, you remove the coffee filters from the pitcher. If you don’t, it really sours the flavor and ruins the whole batch.

You can of course, also look up other recipes on Pinterest or put your own spin on it. But, if you decide to make your own batch of cold brew, let me know how it turns out!
