Yoga for Credit

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Seton Hall chapter.

This semester I had a few credits to take some random classes so I signed up for Zen and Yoga: The Art of Living. Obviously, I would want to take something that was an easy A, but I’m in college and pay all of this money so I should at least take something with substance. I decided to take this Yoga course. I had had two really good friends take it and gush over how much they loved it. I actually saw a change in my friend’s attitude. I actually wanted change too. So with my free credits I signed up for Yoga.

I walked in really not knowing what to expect. I knew this wasn’t a yoga class where we would do a bunch of arm movements, but I was ready for anything. We had a required book, DVDs, and workout so this class wasn’t going to be just a joke. In this course you go through The Seven Spiritual Laws by Deepak Choprah. We have spent about a week or so on each law. This has given us time to actually reflect on what we have read and try to live it out.

The professor is an amazing, energetic yoga lovingly woman name Claire Diab. She has an extensive resume. She has traveled all over the world teaching yoga and even taught with the amazing Deepak Choprah himself. She is also the founder of the American Yoga Academy in Summit, New Jersey.  You can tell she has a passion and love for yoga, but also us as students. We have good conversation and discussions about life and how the principles relate to life which has made this class so beneficial for me. We start off each class with meditation and breathing exercises. I don’t know I needed it until I did it. Now I try to meditate every day and it has truly helped me.

Many times we end up taking classes that just help us get ahead toward our career- which is good and what college is for- but we should also try to take class and of things that will help us outside of the classroom. I have learned that these spiritual laws are not just fun little suggestions you read and move on. These are spiritual laws that will help you live a happier/healthier life. I started putting many of these principles into place in my life and feel a change. So I will share the top 5 things I have learned and has made a difference in my life:

  1. The number one thing is if it doesn’t nourish you then let it go from friendships to food. It something or someone isn’t nourishing you then there is no reason to have it or them in your life.
  2. Ask God [Universe] for what you want and begin looking for a sign. When you’re trying to decide between two choices ask God for a sign and there will be signs everyone. It’s true. It worked for me.
  3. Meditation is important. Meditation helps clear your mind. I started meditation every day and it has helped me less stressed.
  4. Affirmations are important. Every class she gives us different affirmations and I try to look over them daily. Because what you think you become.
  5. This isn’t so much a lesson but something we did in class and I feel like is so important. We wrote down our intentions and desires. But the way we write them is by saying “I am….” And not “I want to be…”

If you have the opportunity to take this class I highly recommend it. This class has helped me and I am grateful for it.
