Ways To Get Into The Holiday Spirit

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SCU chapter.

Thanks to Buddy in the movie Elf, we all know that “the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.”  However, there is so much more we can do besides belting out our favorite Christmas carols to get into the holiday spirit.

1.  Whip out that ugly Christmas sweater

Here at Santa Clara, we love our ugly Christmas sweaters.  You will actually be out of style if you don’t have one.  The tackier the sweater, the better the sweater!  They are festive AND cozy.  If you are in need of one of these bad boys, I recommend paying a visit Moon Zooom, a vintage store in San Jose.  Even more, embrace the ugliness: add a turtleneck underneath.

2.  Spread the cheer

Don’t be a Grinch or a Scrooge, because nobody will like you.  Even if you are stressed with finals, sad about the weather, or lonely, the holiday season is supposed to be filled with joy.  Wish the people around you a happy holiday season or even just smile!  As Buddy the Elf says, “smiling’s my favorite.”

3.  Watch the 25 Days of Christmas on ABC Family

Don’t tell me you don’t love those puppet movies on ABC Family.  Or how about National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation?  Some of these movies are cheesy, but they are all classics.

4. Make a gingerbread house

Even though they never turn out like the pictures on the box, gingerbread houses are still fun to make.  After you finish constructing the masterpiece, you can decide to…

a) Place it on the counter just for show

b) Eat it

c) Use it for ammunition in a food fight

d) All of the above

5.  EAT!

It is so cold out during the Christmas season.  Why not gain some extra “blubber” to keep you warm?  I mean, there are so many kinds of holiday cookies and treats to eat!  You can’t just let them go to waste.  Be #thankful for the sweet treats in your life.  If the holidays are about peace and joy, why not have another “peace” of pie?

Overall, now is the time to get into the holiday spirit.  I mean, they don’t call us SANTA Clara for nothin’!
