Spring Break Ideas that Won’t Break the Bank

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SCU chapter.

Having an amazing Spring Break can seem near impossible when on a budget. From all the glamorous trips that you just can’t seem to afford, it’s easy to just assume your weeklong break after winter quarter will be nothing special. But you don’t need a lot of money to have a great vacation! Here are some ideas that won’t break the budget:

Airbnb

Sure you can spend what might seem like your life’s saving on a few days in a castle, but the awesome site also has many more affordable options. If you get a group, you and your friends can stay in a cool house for your vacation for not a lot of money at all!

Camping

Renting a campsite usually is not an expensive fee, again, especially if you split it with friends. So if you can manage to collect some gear from friends who may have a spare tent lying around or if you want to splurge a little extra and rent from a local camping store, you can have an awesome few days out in nature. But, be sure to book a spot soon as a lot of cool campsites fill up fast around this time of year.

Go Home (with a friend)

If home isn’t too far for you and always seemed to be the plan anyway go ahead and bring a friend or two home (with mom and dad’s permission of course). Sure Netflix on the couch all week might seem relaxing but it would probably get a bit boring. Having a friend right along side you can entirely change up the vibe and perhaps even inspire you to explore your hometown a bit more.

Explore Santa Clara (and more)

At SCU we’re lucky enough to live in a pretty cool city that just so happens to be surrounded by even more that can totally be explored throughout the week of Spring Break. No car? No problem. The Caltrain is right off campus and you can find ticket prices to places like San Francisco that aren’t so expensive. You can make tons of day trips out of the week while still living in the comfort (and free-ness) of your dorm.

Volunteer

This one can be done anywhere. So whether you’re going home, staying at school, or visiting a friend, volunteering can be a fun way to pass the time that is actually helpful and not a waste of the week (sorry, Netflix). If staying at school is your ideal week then you can find an organization you feel passionate about through SCCAP and see how you can get involved.
