5 Clothing Trends Guys Don’t Understand

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SCU chapter.

Last time around, I gave you a glimpse of some things guys wished girls knew.  This time, I’m taking a look at the many items of clothing girls wear that guys, well, just don’t understand.

Nearly all the guys I asked were stumped at first, so I gave a few examples of things I don’t understand other girls wearing (like crazily ripped jeans – paying $100 to look like you just got attacked by a bear?).  And suddenly, the floodgates were opened.  Many of the answers were specific to the guy, but there were definitely some patterns.

So, without further ado, here are the top five clothing and style trends that guys can’t wrap their heads around:

1.  UGGs

“I don’t get why girls wear UGGs.  I mean I guess they’re comfortable…but ‘cmon.  They look dumb.”

“UGGs should be left in high school.  Or better yet – middle school.  They’re really weird looking.”

“No.  Just…no.”

2.  High-Waisted Shorts

“Seriously, how do [girls] breathe in those?”

“I feel bad saying this…but shorts that high remind me of Urkel [from Family Matters].”

3.  “Those really long dresses” aka Maxi Dresses

“Unless you’re really tall and skinny, it doesn’t work.”

“When short girls wear them they just look shorter.”

“They’ve got those crazy patterns like zigzags or stripes.  Kind of makes my eyes hurt… there’s just too much dress.”

4.  “Those things that are just one piece of fabric” aka Bandeaus

“Do they even do anything?”

“I didn’t even know those had a name.  But yeah, I don’t understand why girls wear them.”

“Strapless is sexy, sure.  But those don’t look all that great.”

5.  See-Through Shirts

“I mean, you’ve got my attention.  But I’m also wondering why you thought you looked good leaving your room like that.”

“I really don’t get girls who wear shirts that show their bras.  It looks really bad.”

“I think girls think they’re being sexy wearing [see-through shirts].  But you don’t look sexy: you look desperate.”

(This is why we wear bandeaus.)

So, there you have it!  But before you send your favorite Maxi dress to the back of your closet, remember: what matters most is that you feel beautiful, confident, and perfectly “you” in whatever you wear. As Betsey Johnson once said, “Girls don’t dress for boys; they dress for themselves and each other. If girls dressed for boys, they’d walk around naked.” So if guys don’t understand your outfit, that’s just fine.  We don’t understand all their clothing choices either (Like the backwards-hat-and-sunglasses combo. Really, what is the point of that?).
