4 Ways to Beat the Back to School Blues

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SCSU chapter.

It can be tough to get back into the swing of things after summer has said its farewell and we trade our sunscreen and flip flops in for boots and book bags. We are waking up early again, and sitting for long periods of time staring at a professor, and running from parking garages to classrooms. Our free time is not really ours anymore since not only did classes start again, but we now also have papers to write, group projects to meet for, internships and after school extracurriculars. Yes, it can be hard, but we can’t let it get us down. Think about it, by the time Thanksgiving rolls around you’ll be a total pro at handling all the balls you’re juggling.

We’ve compiled a list of tips to help you cope with the back to school blues.

1. Create a routine

There is no getting out of the fact that you have responsibilities, so create a schedule that you feel is right for you. Figure out what you’ll do in the breaks between your classes, set working periods where you do homework without distractions. Having a routine can help you get used to all the hectic whirlwind.

2. Reshape your thoughts and environments

We all hang out with our friends, we love our friends! But sometimes we need to step away and do what we need to do. If you are looking to get back into academic mode, focus and really get your work done, you’re going to need to step away from time to time. Go somewhere you know you will be able to do your work without distractions. Think about it, you set a goal to finish some of your work and then you can spend time with your friends without worrying about assignments!

3. Have fun!

When your work (or at least half of it) is done, do something for you! Whatever it is that makes your heart pound with excitement, go and do that! We need the sweet to get through the tough times.

4. Make time for yourself

Just as you need time away from your friends to get work done, you also need time away from your work to pamper yourself. Getting back into a rigorous routine can be exhausting for sure, so look out for yourself. That does not only mean take care of your physical self but also your mental, and emotional self.

It is always hard to start another school year, but know that it will be over before you know it, so enjoy it and make the best of every moment.
