How to Complete an Internship with Confidence

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Scranton chapter.

While everyone was on break, I had the opportunity to intern at a local hospital. During my internship, I learned quite a bit and experienced a lot that will forever change my mind about certain things.

I will be honest, going into and at the start of my internship, I was quite nervous about what it would entail. I wasn’t sure if I would be doing office tasks or if I would learn something. Fortunately, my experience was excellent and because it was so amazing, I feel I can share some of my tips for having a meaningful internship. Here are some tips on how to ace an internship with confidence!

1. Do not be afraid to speak up and give ideas

Going into the internship I was afraid of expressing my thoughts. However, as the internship continued, I became more comfortable and freely expressed my thoughts. To my surprise, some of my suggestions were good and were taken into consideration before the directors made decisions.

2. If you want something, ask for it!

During my internship, I fell in love with the idea of working in a hospital. I loved it so much that I spoke up for myself and asked my supervisor if it would be at all possible to complete an advanced internship in the summer. I am happy to say chances are high that I will be completing an externship during the summer because I spoke up. Without speaking up, nothing would have happened and the internship I did would have been the last.

3. If you are stuck doing office work, speak up.

One thing my professor said was that we should not be doing office work during an internship. Instead, we should be having a meaningful experience in which we learn and grow from. I believe that if you are told to office work, you should speak up because your time is limited and you should be allowed to gain knowledge in the field in which you plan on working in.

4. Wear professional clothing

I must say, I was uncomfortable in professional clothing at first. Having to wear heels and work clothes for 9 hours a day was bothersome. However, after a few days, I was more comfortable than ever with this new wardrobe. I had good fitting clothing that made me feel confident. I not only dressed well, but also felt like I fit the part of a professional.

5. Confidence is key

Without a little confidence, I don’t think that I would have been able to gain so much from the internship as I did. With that little confidence, I was able to grow and grow even more confidence that has become a part of me now.

Overall, my internship was excellent and I plan on completing one again. My final word of advice to you is to have fun while completing an internship because it does not last forever!
