7 Things that Happen When Your Best Friend is Your Cousin

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Scranton chapter.

Let’s face it: we all had a favorite cousin when we were growing up. For some, it was the older cousin who was straight outta middle school and actually wore *gasp* bras! For others, it was the little cousins- the ones you torture play with as much as you want. Then, there are those special relationships- the cousins that are right around your age. These are the ones who end up becoming your best friend.

1. You grew up together, which meant you were ugly together.

We’ve all gotten Snapchats from our cousin-friends showcasing our hideous seventh grade school picture. Luckily if your BFF does this, you’ve got lots of blackmail on hand.

2. You always have someone at family gatherings.

Whether you’re hiding from your crazy aunt somewhere or trying to steal all of the brownies on the table without anyone noticing, your cousin always comes through.Every embarrassing moment in your life has usually involved them.

3. Don’t we all almost burn the house down with a sparkler while babysitting? No? Ok…

4. You don’t have to explain your crazy family tree to them.

Wait, so you’re related on both sides because your dad’s brother married your mom’s sister? But then you were twice removed?

5. They’re the first person you call when you’re in trouble.

Accidentally hit your brother with a baseball? Your cousin and BFF to the rescue!

6. They know just how weird you actually are.

If you like to randomly dance in the kitchen while baking cookies, you don’t have to worry about your cousin judging you.

7. You have a friend for life.Your cousin will always be there for you no matter what. Whether its break-ups or crazy family drama, you know that you’ll have a sidekick forever.

Emily is a Scranton native trying to make a name for herself. She is a senior at the University of Scranton majoring in Strategic Communication with a concentration in Public Relations and a minor in Finance. When she's not goofing off with her friends or spending time with her family, there is a very big chance that she's binge watching Criminal Minds on Netflix. Emily has a love-hate relationship with Moe's Southwest Grill and would probably eat chips and queso for every meal if it didn't mean that she'd have to work out afterwards. She loves being a part of Her Campus Scranton and can't wait to see what her future holds!
