Tips for Living a Healthier College Lifestyle

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SCAD chapter.

This quarter, while still early, has become one of the most satisfying quarters I have ever had, and not because it means I’m almost done. While this is my last quarter of SCAD I decided to I don’t want to head into adulthood holding on to the weight of college stresses, AKA the weight gain that comes from all-nighters filled with sugary caffeine drinks and late night Parker’s runs. I think of all the exciting things that are about to happen in my life, and I just want to experience them with a happy healthy body, that fits into my favorite dress.

Now when it comes to diet and exercise while in school, I have been the worst. I think I did one workout with my freshman roommate and haven’t touched it since. So I knew this wasn’t going to be easy especially with the pressures of making sure I graduate, but it’s some thing that has to be done.

I immediately took to Pinterest to find the easiest diet I could. I found the GM Diet, which is really strict and tough but I got to eat as much as I wanted as long as I stuck to the specifications. I’m not a doctor or trained dietitian so I’m not going to tell you how to do it, but it is easy to look up.  I also found a place that had Spin classes, which is the only exercise I have ever remotely enjoyed.

I am on my second week of the diet/exercise and I have to tell you, it’s going really well! I never thought I would be one to write about diet/exercise, but I think it would have helped me a lot to hear from someone like me, who hates healthy living give a few tips and tricks on how to do it successfully with out wanting to burn things throughout the process. Even though, I still have my days when I get hangry and have to make everyone around me feel as miserable as I do.

So these are my tips:

·Don’t set a weight goal, find a piece of clothing that you want to fit into. For me, it’s a pink romper I got in high school. I honestly don’t think I have been able to wear it in like 5 years. But its so perfect for a beach trip I’m taking with my boyfriend in July, so my goal is to be able to wear it by then.

·DON’T CHEAT! I know that’s probably a given, but find little ways to stop yourself. Every time I want to cheat I go on Pinterest and look at cute outfits for the beach trip.

·Take a step back, and realize that this is for the best. I can’t tell you how many times I have said “I’ll start the diet tomorrow”. Now, I wish I had started this many months ago because the feeling of pride that I’m doing this alone is enough to keep me going.

· Pick a diet you can stick to. Don’t pick a crazy juice diet that , most importantly is insanely unhealthy, but is not something that’s realistic while you’re in school and busy and need tons of energy to make it through the week.

So there are  my tips, not that there are many, but it’s what is keeping me going. I feel great, and not only that, its something I can control. I feel like at this age there are so many things going to and life is about to clap back at us so hard. We are about to be out on our own with bills and hard times that are beyond our control, so why not have one thing in your life that you can control? Honestly, with everything going in my life right now, its what is keeping me sane.
