7 Unique Underground Female Artists To Look Out For

The music industry can seem repetitive and boring sometimes, but there are a few artists out there who are real gems. Women in the music industry especially tend to be overly sexualized or sometimes don’t have any actual talent, but here are a few that are worth the listen and deserve more recognition. Thank me later!

 

Oshun

This NYC duo are the epitome of creativity. Comprised of two phenomenal artists, Niambi Sala and Thandiwe, this duo blends hip hop, neosoul, and R&B to form a new and original sound. Their music touches on many topics like blackness, love, politics, and most importantly spirituality, hence their name. They are named after the Yoruba Orisha of love, fertility, wealth and beauty, Oshun. Like their namesake, they radiate the essence of womanhood and beauty with their melodic yet thought provoking music. Keep an eye out for them on the scene!

Junglepussy

With a name like Junglepussy, you know this independent NYC rapper is as unique as they come. Her music is extremely freeing, empowering, and catchy with her blending of hip hop, soul, and island music (specifically Jamaican and Trinidadian). She is certainly different from most rappers, which is seen through her promoting things such as healthy eating and self love. With her eccentric clothing, fun visuals, and bold lyrics Junglepussy is definitely an artist to watch out for.

Lion Babe

Lion Babe is a NYC electro soul duo comprised of singer-songwriter Jillian Hervey and producer Lucas Goodman. With their mellow beats and Jillian’s raspy soulful voice, they are definitely the duo to look out for. Known for her big curly mane of hair, she is also the daughter of Vanessa Williams. Yet, she holds her own when it comes to making a name for herself. Jillian’s effortless style, expressive voice, and killer dance moves show that she was born to be not only a star, but also the definition of a true artist.

Jamila Woods

Chicago native, Jamila Woods, is not only a soul singer, but also a poet and songwriter. She is known on the Chicago scene for her efforts as Associate Artistic Director for nonprofit organization Young Chicago Authors. Her musical style merges soul, hip-hop, and gospel in a mellow blend with impactful lyrics that cover topics such as blackness, womanhood, and Chicago living. She’s gained notoriety through her collaborations with Chance the Rapper and her song “Blk Girl Soldier”. She is certainly one to look out for!

Ibeyi

This French-Cuban duo, made up of sisters Lisa and Naomi Kainde-Diaz, are a blast of fresh air in today’s music. Their style is like no other due to their blend of Yoruba and English. Their music touches the soul and is very raw and expressive when it comes to lyricism, instrumentation, and their vocals. The duo is named after twin Orishas, with their name Ibeyi, translating to twin in Yoruba. Ibeyi’s music is deeply inspired by the Yoruba spirituality, with them having roots in Santeria, the Latin-Carribean offspring of the Yoruba religion. The two are rising up quickly on the music scene. One listen and you’ll be hooked!

IAMDDB

If you like jazzy and chill music, you must check out IAMDDB. This Manchester singer-songwriter labels herself as urban jazz. Her smooth vocals and melodic tunes support this label. With her alternative sound, she is a breath of fresh air in a cookie cutter music industry. She is pretty new to the scene, but working her way up with alternative tunes such as “Leaned Out” and “Panorama”.

Abra

This Atlanta artist is the only singer under Awful Records. Her music style is considered alternative R&B with some indie pop influences. Abra’s smooth sultry voice, eccentric style, and tantalizing lyrics draw you in. Not only is she a singer, she’s also a songwriter, producer, and experiments with directing her own visuals. She is going to rise up the ranks, no doubt.
