5 Things Professors Do That Make Your Day

SCAD Atlanta has a wide range of professors. Every day they do something to better our futures and try not to make everyone go crazy by overloading us students while challenging us to do better. And sometimes, they do something that just makes our day.

1. Personalize the Lesson

Sometimes it’s hard to see what you’ll use the things you’re taught in college for. So these professors tell you what they’ve done. The personal touch in these lessons make it more interesting, and the lectures don’t feel like lectures. When the subject is relatable, it’s easier to remember and learn.

2. Offer Unprompted Extra Credit

College is hard, and maybe your grade point average isn’t quite where you want it to be. But raising your hand in class to ask for extra credit can be embarrassing. The professors that go out of their way to say, “hey, this extra field trip can be add extra credit points,” are forever loved.

3. Go Easy on Timing

SCAD Atlanta has classes that end at 4:30 and start at 5:00. The traffic can be unpredictable and cause anxiety if you need to get to your job. So the professors that understand when you’re late for those reasons, or when you need to leave at 4:20 to pad the time it takes to get to your work, make life a lot easier.

4. Understand that Speaking in Front of Crowds is Terrifying

Some people are born charming and are made to speak in front of the class. Then there’s the rest of us. SCAD tries to make this easier by preparing us and making it mandatory for every class to have a spoken project. These requirements are outside of our professors’ control, but what they can do is grade a little easier for those with anxiety.

5. Offer Extra Help Sessions

SCAD has a wide range of classes and everyone has to take a class once in a while outside of their comfort zone and major. We get stuck in a class where everyone seems to know what they’re doing while we’re left floundering in the background. Professors who offer frequent extra help sessions to assist those not quite on their classmates’ level make the quarter feel a little bit easier and are greatly appreciated.
