With fall kicking into high gear, I can’t be the only one who knows that allergies are coming too. Sniffling, sneezing, coughing and not wanting to do much else besides sleep or curl up and watch Netflix all day—we’ve all been there. Here’s the question some first-year students (myself included) may be thinking:

“How am I going to get through a week of classes when I’m sick?”

As I just made it through my first “sick week,” here is my advice:

1.     Get assignments done ahead of time! In my case for example, I woke up this past Sunday and could feel a cold coming on as the day continued. Knowing that there was a high chance that as my cold got worse, I wouldn’t be up for much, I got assignments done that I technically didn’t even have to think about until the second half of the week.

2.     Sleep! Obviously, if you have classes you should be going unless you’re really sick. Don’t blow off all your homework, but if you need to block out a good 10 to 20 minutes between doing your homework to just turn out the lights and close your eyes then go for it!

3.     Be comfortable! If comfortable for you is wearing your favorite sweats and a cozy sweatshirt then go right ahead and do that! You have to do what is best for you to get through the day.

4.     Take medicine! This is kind of an obvious one. Whether you have your car and are able to run to Walmart or you go to the health center, do what you have to.

5.     Stay hydrated. The last thing you want is a headache from dehydration when your body is already achy to begin with. Tea and water are your friends here.
