My First Experience at Fashion Week

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SBU chapter.

Hello my beauties! :)

I am happy to say that this summer, I completed my first day of working at New York Fashion Week! I dreamed of doing this for a long time now, and I finally got the opportunity through my summer internship at Williamson PR & Showroom, a Luxury Fashion Public Relations Agency. The Williamson PR Team and I worked at the Men’s New York Fashion Week show for the clothing brand, “The General Idea.”

After labeling all the seats with place-cards that I made just the day before, we were all assigned a different role. Some of the team were either checking people in backstage or at the front entrance, and others were handing out programs.

Surprisingly, I was given a very important role as a “runner” for the owner of the company I work for. In other terms, throughout the entire show, I shadowed her and acted as her assistant. At first this seemed to be a little intimidating. Although, once I got the hang of the walkie-talkie and the running around in heels, I felt more comfortable.

Again, attending a show during NYFW has been a life-long goal of mine. Therefore, I made sure to take advantage of everything I could. As I followed my boss around, we stumbled upon every single piece of the puzzle including everything from hair and makeup to live interviews.

Everything was going smoothly until the seats really started to fill up. Issues arose with seating misunderstandings and I needed to keep track of all the guests that were supposed to be accommodated by my boss. Plus, once we closed the doors (meaning we did not let anyone else in), the next crucial task was clearing the runway.

Quite honestly, when the room went dark, the music turned on, and the models walked out from behind the wall, I felt so accomplished. From that day on, I knew for a fact that I was going to work in fashion for the rest of my life. No matter what, I want my work to be associated with fashion, that way it will always be enjoyable to me.

Something else I realized during my experience was that I hope to be in charge someday just like my boss. Being a Leo, my personality is better suited for being a leader rather than a follower. Although trust me, I do understand that everyone starts somewhere at the bottom :)
