Naomi: A Legend In The Making

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Savannah chapter.

Recently, we have started highlighting women in our chapter that are doing amazing things and really showcasing what Her Campus is about and repersents! We are calling this profile series ” A Look Into Our Chapter”. The first profile is on one of our top journalist Naomi McGee! Naomi is an amzaing journalist, active memeber, and all around joy to be around! Check out our interview on this delight!

Otissia: What is your major and why did you pick it?

Naomi: Mass Communications with a concentration in journalism. I have always had a passion for reading and writing for as long as I can remember, and after I took a video broadcasting class in eighth grade I knew for sure that this was the career field I wanted to be in.

Otissia: What do you hope to accomplish with your degree?

Naomi: I hope to have more opportunities than I would have without a degree, be an inspiration to anyone that may need it, and ultimately be successful and happy in my career.

Otissia: Why did you decide to attend Savannah State University?

Naomi: My high school band director and auxiliary coach both attended HBCU’s and were big influences on me. We always got a chance to see HBCU bands and campuses on trips and talk to the students about life at an HBCU, so from then I knew that’s where I wanted to go. Additionally, it was a new place that’s close to home but not to close, and it’s by the beach. I also came to SSU with one of my best friends.

Otissia: What do you hope to get out of your personal HBCU experience?

Naomi: A one of a kind experience that I can’t get from anywhere else, a strong sense of family and community, knowledge about myself, my history, and my people.

Otissia: What is your favorite thing about Savannah State University?

Naomi: The variety of people that attend and the fact that there is something for everyone to get involved with. One myth about HBCU’s is that there is a “lack of diversity” which definitely isn’t true. There are people of all different races, cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds.

Otissia: What are 3 things you could tell incoming freshman to help them?

Naomi:Prioritize; always make sure your work and business is handled before you have fun and party. Get involved in organizations; student life, network, and go to as many events as you can even if you have to go by yourself. Find a mentor and surround yourself with a solid group of people who are like minded and trustworthy.

Otissia:What extracurricular activities are you involved in and why would you recommend them to others& why are they important to you?

Naomi: I’m a journalist and correspondent for the Her Campus chapter at SSU, I’m a member of the Sapphire dance line with the Powerhouse of the South marching band, vice president of the environmental club, secretary of the Mass Communications Student Association, a member of Savage Inc. modeling troupe, Tiger Life entertainment, and the National Association of Black Journalists.

Otissia: What are you most passionate about in life and why?

Naomi: Living life to the fullest each and every day. Life is short and you never know how much time you have left, it could be 10,000 days or 10 minutes so it’s important to live every day as if it could be your last. To me that means spending time with loved ones, never being afraid to try new things, going on adventures, turning your dreams into reality, and doing what you love.

Otissia: What are 3 things we should know about you?

Naomi:I am originally from Queens, New York, I’m a Scoliwarrior, and a proud bisexual woman.

Otissia: How do you feel about feminism and are you in support of the movement, are you a feminist?

Naomi:I definitely consider myself a feminist and I think everyone should be. Feminism is simply the belief that woman and men should have equal rights and opportunities across all areas. I think the idea of feminism and what feminism actually is can be misconstrued a lot of the time. Some people think it’s about women wanting to be superior to men or hating men when that’s not at all true.

Hi, My name is Otissia McKinnon. I was born and raised in South Georgia and now I currently attend Savannah State University as a Social Work Major. Helping those who are unable to help themselves is my passion and I intend on making it my life's work. I thoroughly enjoy writing, editing, building and branding social media content. My future plans are to build a women's organization that not only empowers the youngest of hearts but encourages girls as they grow older to be the most loving and successful versions of themselves they can be.
