Otissia: What is your major and why did you pick it?

Ty’Kia:My major is Social Work because i love helping and aiding families and people all over the world, i’ve always been a good listener and awesome at giving advice that i fell in love with helping others and to think I could use my talent forever became something i enjoy and would not mind doing for the rest of my life.

Otissia: What do you hope to accomplish with your degree?

Ty’Kia: After receiving my masters In social Work i hope to travel and serve  all over the world aiding and developing group homes and foster facilities and also creating funding programs for the youth.

Otissia: What hope to get out of your personal HBCU experience?

Ty’Kia:  Personally I want to develop personal growth within my HBCU community and collaboration among the student body and other peers with the same view points as myself.

Otissia: What is your favorite thing about Savannah State University?

Ty’Kia: My favorite is the sunset view of the marsh beside the biology building, and the collaboration and ssu family support that we all have for each other.

Otissia: What are 3 things you could tell incoming freshman to help them?

Ty’Kia: Be YOU, if people cannot accept who you are then so be it, they are NOT worth knowing you, expand your knowledge, even if its not in a classroom ! always learn something and communication as well as determination are the keys to success, if you want it speak up if you want it badly do it.

Otissia: What are you most passionate about in life and why?

Ty’Kia: FREEDOM , the ability to move, sing talk walk do what i feel is necessary with no shame. living unapologetically

knowing that i can maximize my potential anywhere with my own unique sensibility. Not compromising what make me the person i am today for anyone.

Otissia: What lessons have you learned as a ( whatever your classification is)?

Ty’Kia: In my college experience as a freshman i have learned that finding yourself and being the best YOU that you can be is way better than trying to fit in. & that sometimes you have to walk alone and be content with yourself its okay to be the loner and observant. Also, Friends come and go some just can not sustain the ride so never burn our your gas trying to keep them along.

Otissia: What are 3 things we should know about you?

Ty’Kia:I am very passionate about modeling, and have been for years, its very valuable to me being able to display talent. I am a proud bisexual woman <3, and I love, enjoy and create poetry.

Otissia: What makes you unique? How do you feel about carefree black women, and #blackgirlmagic

Ty’Kia: My personality makes me unique, i have the ability to make connections with anybody very open minded. As a carefree black women, being carefree means a lot not letting my status of standing on the margins of race an gender define and disable me from enjoy and living my life freely.

Otissia: What is your favorite college memory so far?

Ty’Kia: Lol okay, so me and three of my friends thought it was okay to party on a Thursday, knowing that we had a midterm that Friday. However of course you know college students party Thurs-Sun so we thought we could fit in with the upper class-men by attending and then just setting an alarm to wake up for the following day. Lets just say things were chaos trying to wake up lol I jumped out bed springing into action putting on clothes while calling my friends THAT NEVER PICKED UP!! soon as i got to their dorms, They were so tired from last night I jumped threw the window waking them up and we all rushed to class. Lets just say I will not be doing that again!

Hi, My name is Otissia McKinnon. I was born and raised in South Georgia and now I currently attend Savannah State University as a Social Work Major. Helping those who are unable to help themselves is my passion and I intend on making it my life's work. I thoroughly enjoy writing, editing, building and branding social media content. My future plans are to build a women's organization that not only empowers the youngest of hearts but encourages girls as they grow older to be the most loving and successful versions of themselves they can be.
