A Year in the Life of a Dancer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SAU chapter.

Although this Saturday is the big event that everyone at St. Ambrose has been looking forward to, Dance Marathon has actually been going on for the entire school year. Fundraising and various events for the dancers have been put on by the Dance Marathon Executive Board throughout the school year to keep everyone excited and show that Dance Marathon is a year-round club. If you’re one of over 350 dancers, let’s take a walk down memory lane at what you have had the chance to do this year, and if you aren’t dancer yet, look at what you could have done and can do next year.

It all started with an informational meeting back in September, and the cafeteria was full of students registering to dance in October. FTK Week rolled around in November, which included wearing Dance Marathon shirts, meeting the kids and enjoying some delicious ice cream treats. A discounted skating night at The River’s Edge Ice and Roller Skating Rink rounded out first semester. The end of January and beginning of February got dancers back in the groove with Dancer Appreciation Week. Dancers got the chance to put a pie in the face of one of the morale captains and tye-dye T-shirts. Marathon Monday has been reminding everyone on campus that the Dance Marathon is coming up as dancers have been wearing their orange shirts (you guessed it) every Monday. These are just a few of the many opportunities that dancers had over the course of the year. Dancers will always stay up to date with email reminders sent out as well as following SAU DM on Facebook for all the latest updates.

The suggested fundraising goal for dancers is $75, but many have exceeded far beyond that mark. With students able to accept donations online, people from all over have been able to contribute to helping our Miracle Children and the Children’s Miracle Network. Every time an email shows up proclaiming that “You have received a donation” makes it all the more exciting for the dancers. These little reminders that other people are supporting what you’re doing makes you want to keep fundraising. And the thought of getting to help the kids? Well that is out of this world–the best motivation. After all, everything Dance Marathon does is For The Kids!

All of these events keep Dance Marathon on the minds of the dancers and builds the excitement for Saturday’s 8-hour event.

So if you haven’t already, sign up for St. Ambrose’s Dance Marathon this Saturday from 3-11 p.m. for a life changing experience. Getting to meet the kids and their families makes the dance that much more inspiring. And if you have, get ready for the best 8 hours of your life because all of your hard work over the past year is about to pay off!
