Romantic Comedies: God’s Greatest Creation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SAU chapter.

In my early teen years, I discovered a great thing called Netflix. At the time, Netflix was just starting out, and summer was just beginning. I subscribed to the three movies at a time deal where they would be sent to your home. That summer, I discovered the great side of movies: romantic comedies. As the award season is slowly coming to an end, and as the Academy Awards are coming up, I decided to share a few of my favorite “RomComs.”

As some people refer to them as “Chick Flicks,” I look at these movies as masterpieces. The casts are always paired well, and the story line always turns out to be romantic, with a comical turn to it. Besides, what’s romance without a little drama, and a little laugh? One of the first couple movies I discovered, especially when I was younger, was Pretty Woman, and Runaway Bride. These two amazing movies, directed by Garry Marshall, created a dynamic duo of Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. Pretty Woman reflects on a lonely, rich man who is looking for anything that involves a distraction away from his hectic work life. As he meets an interesting and unique woman, he learns more about her, and realizes that people’s appearances shouldn’t neglect love. It’s a must see movie where it takes you back to Los Angeles in the early 90’s, and Rodeo Drive.

In the movie, Runaway Bride, Gere and Roberts team up again for a feature over love that seems hard to come by. Gere is a reporter who does a story over Roberts, the runaway bride, who always seems to ditch at the altar. As the small time girl opens herself to the reporter, they begin to fall in love with each other.  The reporter challenges Maggie, the small time girl to really open herself to love and let go of the fear. Garry Marshall is an excellent director, who is known for his romantic comedies with amazing casts. Any movie by this excellent and talented director is a must-see!

An all-time classic, 13 Going on 30, starring Jennifer Gardner, is a story about a teenage girl who wants to grow up so badly. As she dreams her way into a world of models, magazine shoots, New York City, and a perfect world, she soon realizes she has everything she needs in front of her. A classic movie reflecting on a young woman’s dream to be “thirty, flirty, and thriving,” allow all girls to realize that being young has its advantages. One of the greatest movies I have seen.

Another great classic is When Harry Met Sally. Starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, takes watchers on a storyline of two people who became soul mates without any love. An interesting, yet, funny storyline features all the great things that make a Romantic Comedy. There is loathing, connection, support, friendship, and in the end, love. One of the greatest movies I have seen to date. I recommend this movie for any woman who is looking for a great laugh, to a great love story.

The list goes on and on for the best romantic comedies. These are just a few of my favorites, but there are so many more. Some actresses have gained their credibility from great movies like these. Katherine Heigel, in 27 Dresses won everyone’s heart over. Another great romantic comedy classic, featuring Kate Hudson, in the movie How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, won the hearts of all men, and created scenery of love with lies.

Hi readers! My name is Mary Blesz! I am a sophomore at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. I am double majoring in Marketing and Management, with minors in Public Relations and Organizational Leadership! I am involved with Residence Life on campus, and also cannot wait to help with St. Ambrose's Dance Marathon! Helping out the kids is such a fulfilling thing I have done in the past and can't wait to see where this goes! FTK (For the Kids!)When I am not busy with the mountian full of homework I always have, I will normally be seen with all my friends! My friends are great group of people that I have met here at Ambrose! College has opened my eyes to so many new people! It is kind of interesting to me to meet people from all over; like Chicago (lots of my friends are from the area) and even people who loved in the same hometown!!!I have a huge "passion for fashion." I love to see what is most popular, and incorporate the latest trends within my own style. My style has a mixture of what my mood of the day is! One day I can pull out the high-waisted shorts and the crop top and flaunt my ombre hair, and then another day, wear the classic peplum top, with my hair pulled into a fashionable bun! I love reading about the latest trends and expressing it through my own personal style! I hope you enjoy what I can share with you through my own experiences and stories! Enjoy!!!!
