Christmas Movies of the ’90s

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SAU chapter.

Now that Thanksgiving is over, the Christmas holiday is in full swing. It’s time for lots of festive music, movies, and hot chocolate.

In the past years, many must-watch Christmas movies have been released, like Elf. Disney Pixar is also producing many cute and spirited films.

Yet, we can’t forget about all those awesome movies that were released when we were kids. The 1990s were a great time for Christmas films. Here is a list of some of them that you may want to consider watching and reminiscing with this holiday season!

1.      The Santa Clause (1993) – This is the story of every kid’s dream: your dad becoming Santa Clause! Tim Allen stars in this comedy that takes place mainly at the North Pole after he accidentally kills Santa and has to figure out how to take over the job.

2.      The Nightmare Before Christmas (1994) – This may be one of the first films by Tim Burton that our generation remembers. It is a very creative “clay-mation” film in which the Pumpkin King of Halloween discovers what Christmas is and tries to bring the two holidays together.

3.      Home Alone (1990) – This one barely needs an explanation because it is hard to imagine anyone who could have forgotten this holiday film. When Macaulay Culkin’s character’s family forgets to take him on vacation, he is in for an adventure. The 8-year-old boy uses clever tactics to protect his family home from robbers.

4.      Jingle All the Way (1996) – Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sinbad, this comical movie portrayed the struggle for the perfect toy. Was it an iPad or xBox or some other crazy new technology? Nope. It was the plain and simple toy that our generation grew up with: the TurboMan figurine. It wasn’t well received by critics in its time, but I remember loving this movie.

Now, all you need is a blanket and some hot chocolate and you are set for a 90s Christmas movie marathon this weekend!
