Vegetarian-Friendly Foods at SFSU

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at San Francisco chapter.

San Francisco State is home to thousands of students and as many of us know, walking out of a class from Thornton Hall and scurrying off to the Humanities building can work up an appetite.  So after class is over, you head toward the Cesar Chavez Student Center to wait out that three-hour break until next class, meanwhile wondering what to eat.

The Cesar Chavez Student Center is home to some of the best food places on campus and because our campus is so diverse, the school has cooked up some delicious food items for the vegetarian women on campus.

If you’re new to the campus food scene, vegetarian, or just want to try something new, here’s a list of some of the most popular vegetarian dishes.

 Aram Combo, $4.35, Natural Sensations

Natural Sensations has some great vegetarian items, but if you’re looking for something to fill you up, try the
Aram Combo. It’s served with four slices of aram, (two types of which are your choice) and a salad.

Vegetarians have two options here; the Vegetarian aram and the Roasted Veggies aram.

The Vegetarian aram is loaded with cream cheese, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and spinach, and the Roasted veggies aram consists of eggplant, hummus, tomato, bell peppers, carrots, and cucumber.
Both dishes are accompanied with different salad options that range from pesto pasta to fruit salads. The ingredients of each aram blend well together, and you don’t realize how amazing it is until there’s nothing left on your plate! The fact that it’s a healthier option is just a plus.

Chobani yogurt, $1.95, Natural Senations

This yogurt is a great for an on-the-go snack, and it will definitely help curb your appetite.  Chobani has an array of flavors; strawberry, original, and pomegranate are sold at Natural Sensations. Chobani is also sold at Healthy U, but their price is a bit more expensive. Pomegranate is a must-try, although watch out for the seeds hidden inside.

DIY Bagels, price varies, SFSU Station Cafe

As you wait for the 28 or the shuttle to take you to the Bart station, stop by the bagel shop posted in front of 19th Avenue. They’ve assorted many different types of snack foods like chips, pastries, and delicious bagels. On the menu there are a few vegetarian options, but you can always be risqué and make one up. The toppings are inexpensive (45 cents each), so feel free to be adventurous knowing it is not going to burn a hole in your pocket.

Svelte, $3.49, Healthy U

Walking around campus can take a toll on your energy. Healthy U is a sort of hole-in-the-wall shop that sells many organic snacks, sushi, and foods. If you’re looking for an energy booster, try Svelte, an organic energy drink made from soymilk and complex carbohydrates. There are four flavors: chocolate, French vanilla, cappuccino, and spiced chai. They are definitely not a disappointment, in flavor or energy.

These are just a few great items of many cheap vegetarian options on campus. As long as you’ve got a few bucks in your wallet, you’ll never go hungry at San Francisco State.
