How to Maintain a Sustainable Lifestyle

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at San Francisco chapter.

Everyday is Earth Day.

As humans we should make daily decisions to preserve and care for the planet that lies beneath our feet. The way that we treat our environment has a direct impact on ourselves and our future generations. It is important that we appreciate our land, care for our own selves, and adopt certain habits that will lead us towards living a more sustainable lifestyle.

1. Recycle

Did you know that the average person generates over 4 pounds of trash every day and about 1.5 tons of solid waste per year? That’s a lot of trash. Recycling limits the amount of waste in our landfills and positively benefits our community and environment. It saves energy, conserves natural resources and limits pollution. And it’s such a simple act. All it takes is a conscious effort to mindfully separate and dispose of your trash.

So, don’t be lazy. Save some trees!

2. Compost

Composting is the natural process that turns organic material into a humus rich soil amendment known as compost. Keep a compost bin in your kitchen and throw away your leftover food scraps. Food waste that is decomposed returns to the earth and acts as a natural fertilizer that nourishes the ground and helps grow healthy plants and food. Fruits, vegetables, dairy products, grains, bread, coffee filters, eggshells, and meats can all be composted.

3. Transportation

Ditch the car and find other means to getting around. San Francisco has a great public transportation system, by riding the bus and MUNI you can save gas and money. However, riding a bike or walking to your destination is the most effective and eco-friendly.

5. Go Bagless

Avoid using plastic or paper bags when shopping. Purchase reusable bags and take them with every time you head to the store. It saves the planet and your money.

6. Avoid Plastic Bottles

According to The Water Project, an estimated 80 percent of water bottles in the U.S. never get recycled. Instead of buying bottled water, carry around your own water bottle that you can refill. It’s smart and convenient.

7. Save Power

Conserving energy not only saves you money, but it also reduces the emission of greenhouse gases that produce carbon dioxide (CO2) and contribute to global warming. There are many different ways that you can practice energy efficiency. Avoid using lights during the day, open up some windows and opt for natural lighting and air. Turn off and unplug any electronics and appliances if they are not in use. Small daily adjustments can go a long way.

8. Be Thrifty

The less that you consume, the better. Instead of always buying something new, get creative. Shop locally, check out thrift stores, and farmers markets in your area. Don’t be afraid to buy second-hand items, there is a lot of awesome and unique things that you can find if you just take the time. And when you decide to get rid of your own stuff, don’t throw it away. Always donate or resell your clothes, furniture, or electronics that are still in good condition. After all, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”.
