Here’s What Happened When My Mom Dressed Me for a Week

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at San Diego chapter.

I see myself as a very fashion conscious person, and even had an internship with Nordstrom for two years because of it. As I have grown older and left the uniform days of private school behind, I have experimented with my own personal style. If I had to describe my style, it would be classic with a trendy, girly touch to it, including a lot of colors and patterns.

My mom and I have similar tastes, but she does not always agree with my fashion choices. Perhaps her least favorite thing about my style is my obsession with mixing colors and patterns. Spoiler alert: the outfits of this week never mix colors and patterns.

However, I had a packed week and knew she could give me some great advice on what to wear to everything from job interviews to Target runs. So, with her approval, I hired my mom as my personal stylist for the week.

Day 1: Packed day of classes

This first outfit was extremely fancy for me and I felt like it was something straight off of Pinterest. Going to class in this flared midi skirt definitely made me feel very classy during a fairly typical part of my day.

Day 2: Job Interview

If anything, my mom would have a better idea than me as to what to wear to a job interview. Although I felt overdressed (which is never a bad thing according to CoCo Chanel), I felt like my attire showed how serious I was about applying.

Day 3: Lazy Sunday and Target Run

My mom read my mind when I texted her for my daily outfit advice. Yoga pants and a school sweatshirt was the perfect outfit for a lazy Sunday.

Day 4: Monday :(

Monday morning, I was rather happy that picking out an outfit was not something I had to worry about. Today’s outfit was pretty much my go-to outfit when I am dressing for classes: leggings and an oversized sweater. I guess great minds think alike.

Day 5: RA and RHA celebration

This evening, I was invited to celebrate Residence Life as a part of Residence Hall Council. I had had a pretty exhausting day but I still dressed up nicely. Although I wanted to stay in my oversized sweatshirt I had worn most of the day, dressing up a little fancier was actually a fun way to end an otherwise mundane day.

Day 6: Windy and Cold

Another day of classes, but this day in particular was extremely cold, so I tried to dress as warm as possible.

Day 7: Meetings and Sorority Recruitment Informational

This was my final day of being styled so I think my mom had run out of ideas. She suggested I wear an outfit that I had worn previously. She cheated a bit but made a few modifications to adjust to the cooler weather.

Looking back now, this experiment was a fun way to change up my week. It was also well timed as Southern Californian’s don’t know what to do when the temperature falls below 70 degrees. All in all, a few of my friends saw the difference in my style, but other than that, no one really noticed. I like to think this is because what we wear doesn’t matter to how people in most cases perceive us. This only instilled in me the belief that USD is an accepting and nonjudgmental community.

I feel as though my best attributes are my coffee addiction, my obsession with pastels, but most importantly, my love of puppies. I also adore going to the beach, hugging people, and laughing at my own jokes. You can follow my adventures over at my Instagram @lauren.__xo .
