Trump’s Executive Orders: What’s at Stake and Why Should You Care?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Salisbury chapter.

Since Trump has taken office, his administration has taken major steps to make their interests a “reality”. The Trump Administration has specifically made use of Executive Orders, which are orders signed by the President that hold the same weight as actual law. Many of these executive orders have ignited much controversy and unrest among American citizens.

They include (but are not limited to):

  • A 120-day suspension of the refugee program and a 90-day ban of travel to the U.S. from seven predominately Muslim countries including Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Yemen, Libya, Syria, and Sudan

  • A ban on federal funds to international groups that either lobby for or legalize abortion

  • Two orders on border security and immigration enforcement, including the authorization of the wall and active deportation of immigrants

  • Two orders reviving the Keystone XL and Dakota Access Pipelines

These executive orders have met the most opposition from citizens because they undermine the values of the United States, which is essentially a land of immigrants. These orders either isolate the U.S. from the world or oppress the residents that are already within its borders.

The 90 day ban on travel halted millions of refugees from escaping war and returning to their families.

The Dakota Access Pipelines tear through land of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, which includes sacred land and burial sites. Ending funding to international groups compromises the safety of thousands of women without access to proper healthcare and the means to have safe abortions. The active deportation of immigrants tears families apart and removes a vital part of what actually makes America great, our diversity.

The orders have also contradicted some statements Trump made in his campaign. Although Trump claimed Mexico was going to pay for the wall, the tab will be given to American taxpayers.

Although the Executive Orders are morbid, they’ve inspired millions of Americans to come together and exercise their rights as a representative democracy. Myriads of protests and petitions have erupted nationwide advocating for people who are most vulnerable to these orders. Their work is paying off as well, little by little. A U.S. appeals court has blocked the 90 day travel ban and families are being reunited.

There is hope, but we must continue working hard to make change happen.

What can you do to help?

  • Call or send letters to your local representatives; the president is not the only one who makes up the U.S. government!

  • Call 1 (888) 201-9377 to tell Trump’s administration that you are against the Dakota Access Pipeline

  • Reach out to immigrants and let them know that they are valued and respected

Let’s make America a great place for everyone, not just the few.
