Typically for me, the month of August means one thing and one thing only: the end. The end of carefree sunny days. The end of freedom. The end of summer. August always looms in my mind as pure sadness. It speeds by, and before we know it, us students are back in school counting down the days until we repeat the summer cycle all over again. Sound familiar? We’ve all been there. But this August is different for me. I don’t feel that overwhelming sense of dread every time I see a back to school commercial. Instead I feel…excited? Alright, I said it, I’m eager to go back to school. Weird? Maybe a little bit. But I can almost bet all my fellow first year Belles are feeling the same way. August for us means change. A change of scenery. A change of pace. A change of friends. This change, though a bit frightening, is the start of a new chapter of our lives. This chapter will contain many firsts for us; from our first college class to our first Notre Dame football game in the student section, we will be presented with countless opportunities to create memories and build friendships with so many women and men from Saint Mary’s and Notre Dame alike. I’m excited for this change and I’m ready to embrace it with all that it has to offer. Sure, there’s a little bit (alright, maybe more than a little bit) of sadness in me when I think about having to say goodbye to my family and the familiarity of home, but I guess that’s just part of the change. It’s definitely going to be an adjustment living on my own and getting acclimated to the college life, but I think I’m ready. Scratch that; I KNOW I’m ready. So bring it on, August. I’ve been waiting for you.
