Like many college students, I find myself reaching for a cup of coffee more and more everyday. Whether it’s before an early 8am or a late night studying, coffee consistently has been a go to for me. Although I, like others, have not always been this way- here are the steps to how you became a coffee addict!

1. Your first sip of coffee

Ah, your first ever encounter with the fine taste of coffee. You probably thought it was bitter and gross and only those with super powers could drink it black; but then the acquired taste begins to grow on you.

2. “Hi can I please have a mocha caramel swirl extra extra please”

Your first “real” coffee order. It might as well be a cup of cream and sugar with a splash of coffee added to it, but still it’s coffee. The more you drink it, the less appealing a cup of that much sugar becomes, and you begin to back down, going from extra extra to regular to just milk. You find yourself beginning to crave a cup of real coffee now and then.

3. The occasional trip to Dunkin’ has become a daily one

Before you could get by with stopping at Dunkin’ once a week, but now you see the pink and orange sign and it’s like you’re driving home on autopilot when you pull in that drive-thru. No matter what the conditions are, you will somehow find a way to get your cup of coffee.

4. You need a cup in the morning

You wake up and it is the first thing on your mind. You aren’t yourself until you have your morning cup of coffee, and when you don’t have it? People get concerned. As my dad always says, “you aren’t a morning person until you’ve had a cup of coffee first”.

5. You drink it like it’s water

By now, you no longer second guess getting a second or third cup of coffee during your day, it’s a necessity. People see you and expect to see a coffee in your hand. Your body is basically 70% coffee at this point, but you love the taste and can’t back down now.

6. You get emotional when people say they don’t drink coffee

“What do you mean you don’t drink coffee?” or “Aren’t you tired all the time then?”, are two common phrases that come out of your mouth when someone tells you they don’t drink coffee. It’s basically built into your lifestyle and has become essential to you. How could someone not enjoy it?

7. You no longer can function without it

At this point, you depend on coffee to get you through the day. You have multiple coffee shop apps on your phone filled with gift cards and loyalty perks. You own a Keurig or coffee maker and a French press; and what have you learned from your coffee addiction? How to make the perfect cup exactly the way you like.

And with that- cheers to the fellow coffee addicts, may your cups be filled and your bodies caffeinated!
