How to Get Fit & Stick With It In 2016

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Sacred Heart chapter.

New Year + new me = new fitness routine, right? Almost all of us can relate to feeling super motivated to lose weight and be extra healthy at the start of the New Year when, ultimately, we make these unrealistic resolutions that often only stick with us for a couple of weeks. Inevitably, we eventually go back into our same routine of eating chicken quesadillas four times a week at Linda’s and the chocolate chip cookies from 63’s that always look oh-so amazing. So, how can you make 2016 your year and stick to your diet and exercise routine? Here are ten steps that will help:

1. Workout with a friend!

You would never bail on a lunch date with your friend, would you? Of course not! That being said, planning “fitness dates” with your bestie will make you more inclined to actually show up at the gym (or wherever you may be working out).

2. Cook with fresh ingredients rather than processed foods!

Not only will you be eating healthier, but you will also be exploring new foods that you may not have tried before! You will have more energy, clearer skin and even be in a better mood! Who doesn’t want that?

3. Find fun recipes online!

We all have an unhealthy addiction to Pinterest and Instagram – so start following some accounts that will provide you with some delicious recipes! You can even show off your awesome cooking skills to your friends and family for some added motivation! Find some awesome smoothie recipes here:

4. Find an exercise routine you might enjoy, like Zumba, yoga or spinning!

Do something that is completely out of your comfort zone. You may find an activity that really works for you, and maybe you can meet some friends along the way! It’s much more fun getting your workout on with a buddy.

5. Reward yourself without using food, such as a massage or a manicure.

Instead of completely undoing all of your hard work and great progress, do something fun that doesn’t involve food. Your bikini body will thank you in the summer.

6. Replace junk food in your dorm for healthier options.

Let’s face it. We love to eat a snack when we are stressed out with school. When studying for your exams or writing papers, opt for healthier snacks. Go food shopping and buy guilt-free snacks, like pretzels, low fat popcorn, fruit or veggies. This way, you can still munch on some yummy treats without the guilt that comes along with it.

7. But, don’t deprive yourself either! Everything in moderation.

It’s super difficult to not want to eat a whole pint of Ben and Jerry’s! (Trust me, we’ve all been there) You can still eat your ice cream, but maybe have half of a cup, and add some fruit on the side so you’ll still feel full. It’s a win-win!

8. Take advantage of the gym at school!

There is no excuse to not make it to the gym. It’s right on campus and you don’t pay that $100 athletic fee for nothing! We all know we would rather be watching Netflix and not leaving our dorm, but getting out of your room for an hour and hitting the gym will be super beneficial. You can even go to the gym in between classes. And when it gets nicer out, you can walk around campus or in downtown Fairfield.

9. Make a list of why you want to lose weight & stay healthy, and look at it often!

Maybe take a picture of yourself and keep it as a reminder of how you want to lose weight, be healthier, and live a happier life. Whatever your motivation may be, remind yourself of it in some way to stay motivated every day! You can also write your current weight on a post-it and keep is a constant reminder that you never want to be that number again!

10. & Most importantly, make sure you’re getting enough sleep!

It will be super difficult to eat right and exercise when all you want to do is sleep during the day. So, make sure you get at least eight hours of sleep every night. Studies show that if you get enough sleep, you will be in a better mood and will be more motivated to get more things done throughout the day!
