Brother Jimmy’s: Bringing the South to RU

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rutgers chapter.

Recently, I discovered a little hidden gem on College Ave campus. Most RU students tend to hang out in the middle of Easton, by Hansel and Old Queens. But, if you take a short walk towards the train station, you can stumble upon Brother Jimmy’s.

Informally known as Bro J’s, this restaurant is filled with Southern Charm. Country music plays while you eat and the menu is filled with Southern favorites. Known as the official Rutgers Football BBQ sponsor, Brother Jimmy’s offers everything from BBQ platters to sandwiches to salads and more.

When I went, I tried a couple of things I’ve been craving since I went to Charleston for Spring Break- hush puppies, a puled chicken sandwich, and a side of corn bread. Long story short: it was to DIE for. Hush puppies are, essentially, deep fried cornmeal batter. They are absolutely delicious! Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, served with maple butter, they are a true southern treat.

The sandwich was made with Brother Jimmy’s Original BBQ Sauce, which was amazing. It came with a side of pickles and another side choice, for which I chose a Southern staple- corn bread. It was warm and absolutely perfect, as was my entire meal!

Best part about Brother Jimmy’s is you can order online! Place your order, pick it up between classes, and enjoy it!
