1. Say hi

It sounds very fundamental but stop by the duty desk (if your dorm has an RA on Duty desk) and say hi. A simple conversation that starts off by asking how their day was can lead to a great friendship. Your RA is a person just like you, and chances are they’re very open to getting to know their residents. Not only will this allow them to know who you are, but it’ll make you feel more comfortable about approaching them the next time around. So, next time you see your RA around don’t be afraid to say hi!

2. Find common interests

Your RA is college student, just like you. Chances are that they might also be interested in the newest Calvin Harris album that came out, or the new movie playing at RU Cinema. Even if you don’t have a common interest, it will be nice learning about their interests and sharing some of your own.

3. Attend the events your RA hosts

Honestly, a lot of time and effort goes into planning those events. Your RA will be ecstatic if you decided to attend, even if it’s only for a little while and for the free food. It also gives you and your RA to discuss many different topics, whether it’s about issues on the floor or your favorite movies.

4. Eat with your RA

After a while, eating alone can get pretty boring and lonely. Spice things up by inviting your RA to eat with you (whether it be at the dining hall, in an eatery located in downtown New Brunswick, a student center, or simply ordering take-out from the residence hall). You’ll be killing two birds with one stone and I’m sure your RA will appreciate the offer.

5. Study with your RA

RAs often find themselves juggling their responsibilities as an RA, hang-out time with their friends, part-time work or internships, and periods of time dedicated to studying and homework. A great way to get to know your RA would be offering to study or do homework with them. As long as you guys don’t distract each other, it can be a very productive experience. And who knows, maybe your RA has taken the classes you’re currently taking and can help you out!
