Weekly Devo: Purpose

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rowan chapter.

There are times when I thought I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life after I graduated college, but then something came up or my thoughts/feelings changed and I went back to the drawing board.  I would find something new that I thought I was destined for, but things changed, yet again.

There are days when I feel like maybe I’m not equipped enough to have a great job or go after my dreams.  There are times when I’m left wondering if I’ll ever find my purpose.

The good news?

God has a plan and a purpose for my life, and for yours!

“For I know the plans that I have for you,” says the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” {Jeremiah 29:11}

Now, every plan has steps that need to be taken before it is completed.  God has “steps” planned out for you to take that will get you closer to fulfilling your purpose.

“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” {Proverbs 16:9}

Joseph, the youngest son of Jacob, had a dream that revealed God’s purpose for his life (Genesis 37).  Not too long after, he was sold into slavery by his own brothers because they were jealous that he was their father’s favorite.  Though Joseph endured slavery and imprisonment for about 13 years, he knew that God destined him for great things, so he didn’t give up in the midst of this trial and time of waiting.  He knew that God had a purpose for him.

Just like Joseph, we can get through our trials and any challenges that arise, because we can rest assured that God has a plan for our lives.

After 13 years of slavery and imprisonment, Pharaoh appointed Joseph as second in command over all of Egypt.  God had destined him for this purpose, but in order to fulfill this purpose, he needed to go through the steps.  Each step prepared him to become the ruler that he was meant to be.

Ask God to reveal to you what He wants you to do next, what He has in store for you.

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” {Matthew 7:7}

I am a full-time student at Rowan University majoring in both Early Childhood Education and Literary Studies, with a minor in Writing Arts. I absolutely love writing poetry and hope to get some of mine published one day. I LOVE to read, particularly YA fiction. On my free time I like to watch Netflix, or browse Barnes and Noble for my next read, with a caramel macchiato in hand.
I am a Writing Arts major at Rowan University. Poetry is my best friend. One day, I hope to be a successful writer for a popular magazine in NYC. My dream is to travel to Paris, London, and Rome to explore and write about my experiences there.
