Wayne Sellers is a 20-year-old junior who has a passion for music. With his hilarious sense of humor and ambitious attitude, he works hard for each organization he is involved with–which happens to be many. In his free time, you can find Wayne researching various genres of music and entertaining rowdy crowds with his knack for DJing.

  1. What type of music do you normally listen to?

I can listen to anything most of the time. I have a lot of Hip Hop and R&B in my music library along with a good amount of electronic dance music and Jersey club. I recently started to listen to a bit of country music and I like Florida Georgia Line but anything flies with me. I also have Spotify Premium which it makes it easy for me find new music so I’m on there all day looking for good tracks to listen to and play.

  2. What made you want to become a DJ?

I never had any aspirations to actually DJ but I did always think it was cool so I decided to give it a try. In the summer of 2014 I bought a Hercules DJ Control Air+. It’s a controller that has two  jog wheels that replicate turn tables for scratching and a number of effects you can use to manipulate and mix music. It was affordable and meant for beginners like me, It took me a while to learn how to use it but I think I’ve been improving over time and I’m still learning how to do different things. I like DJing whether it’s by myself or at a house party and it’s something fun to do on the side.

  3. Where have your DJed?

I’ve DJed in my house, a lot but the first event I DJed was Battleship at the REC Center during Homecoming Week 2014. That was a big event and the REC Center pool was filled with people so I was a bit nervous but I was excited for the opportunity. Since then, I did Battle Ship again in spring 2015 and Late Night at The REC about a month ago. I also am Djing for the upcoming  Homecoming Battle Ship on October 14, 2015 so I’m excited for that. Other than that I’ve done a few house parties in the past two weeks and I like playing at those.

  4. Do you look to continue?

I think DJing is a cool thing to do; I don’t see myself amounting to anything big, but I like what I’m doing on the level that I am. It also feels pretty good when people come up to me in the middle of party to compliment me on the music I’m playing so I could get used to that. I’m still in the beginning so I’m not sure what’s next for me I’m going to take it one step at a time.

  5. What was your largest crowd?

My largest crowd was Battle Ship at the REC Center last year, there had to be close to one hundred people there and I was also hosting the event. It got a little hectic having to manage playing music as well as making announcements as often as I was but I was able to get through the night successfully. It went well for my first event and I’ll be back again for it this year.

  6. How often do you DJ?

I don’t DJ every day but whenever I finish class or homework for the day I’ll look for new music or practice mixing tracks. I’ve done three house parties the past week and I’ve done school events before that. I practice when I can and whenever an opportunity for me to DJ pops up I take advantage of it.

  7. What do you get out of it?

For me, it’s fun thing to do and I like when people are having a good time to the music I’m playing. I’m no expert DJ but I’m confident in what I can do and I’m also still learning. I believe DJing is something I enjoy getting better at and if there was a course here at Rowan for it I would be the first one in line to register for it. DJing also helps me expand my reach in music, I listen to more music now and it’s always cool finding new music and playing it for myself or a group of people.
