Single Probs: Why I Prefer Being Single

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rowan chapter.

I believe that your late teens and early twenties are a time to express yourself, get to know your likes and dislikes, and really experience life without being tied down. There are many reasons why college students should be single and here are just a few of why I am:

I love me time. This probably has some to do with the fact that I’m an only child therefore I’m used to being alone a lot, but I truly enjoy my own company. Whether it be hiking, shopping, or even just working out- sometimes it’s better done alone. I can satisfy myself and make myself happy without a guy.

Teens and Twenties should be a time to explore. If I end up falling in love and it works out, I plan on spending the rest of my life with that person. I don’t want the rest of my life to begin right now. I want to figure myself out, make mistakes, travel, spend time with friends and family, and maybe make some time for a couple of dates with a cutie along the way… but that’s after school work, working out, meetings, and me time.

BabyBOOM!I’m not saying it happens to everyone but the majority of my friends and peers from high school who are in relationships have had a baby, some have already had two. These girls have had to give up so much because of having a kid so young and even though they end up happier in most cases, it’s just not something worth giving up the things I’m involved in for right now. I also still enjoy being a kid myself sometimes, I am nowhere near ready to have one.

Technology, Social Media, etc.I hear and see too many relationship problems revolved around technology. I want to go back to the time where you had to actually pick up the house phone and call someone to get ahold of them. People are so tied to technology and it ruins relationships in so many ways. Texting, Facebook, Snapchat…it’s all too much and adding a boyfriend in the mix would be a recipe for disaster.

Maybe one day I’ll meet the love of my life and be swept off my feet, and if that doesn’t happen I’m perfectly fine with traveling the world because that’s what I plan on doing anyways. Until then, I will remain a happy individual just trying to figure things out and enjoy myself along the way.
