The Secret Behind Looking Effortlessly Chic

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rochester chapter.

1.    Wear what compliments your body

“The dress must follow the body of a woman, not the body following the shape of the dress”

– Hubert de Givenchy

Know which styles flatter your shape the most and stay away from those that don’t suit you. A certain trendy dress or a cool pair of pants may look great online, on the rack, or even on a friend, but that does not necessarily mean it will have the same effect on your body. Finding those perfect pieces that compliment your shape is a continuous and never-ending process. That means it’s critical to keep an open mind when you’re shopping. Only with experimentation can we discover the styles, trends, and colors that best suit us!

2.    Don’t underestimate the power of comfort

“A woman is never sexier than when she is comfortable in her clothes.”

– Vera Wang

For an outfit to look genuinely effortless–as if you just threw on a few cute garments that just so happened to work perfectly together in way that reflects your insanely cool personality–it should not require much, if any, work to wear. How effortless can a look really be if you have to keep pulling your skirt down or adjusting the sleeves of your cardigan? Not to mention the painful experience of watching someone walk awkwardly in a pair of divine heels…no one wants to see that struggle. Keep your outfits from becoming too complicated and choose pieces that are easy to wear.

3.    Wear it with confidence

“Fashion is not necessarily about labels. It’s not about brands. It’s about something else that comes from within you.”

― Ralph Lauren

An outfit is not complete without the proper attitude for your occasion. You could wear the most gorgeous garments, but your look won’t truly shine unless you wear it confidently.

4.    Don’t copy and paste

“Fashion has always been a repetition of ideas, but what makes it new is the way you put it together.”

― Carolina Herrera

It is imperative to develop your signature style. There is a fine line between being inspired by a fashion blogger or celebrity’s look and merely replicating their exact outfit. Establishing an aesthetic identity is key to being a true style maven.

5.    Wear pieces you genuinely love

“Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.”

― Rachel Zoe

Dress for yourself and not for anyone else! Buy what you like and feel free to experiment with your wardrobe. Once you’ve discovered which trends, styles, and colors that are most flattering to your shape, then you can invest in pieces that reflect your own personal style.
