How to Hit the Gym This Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rochester chapter.

So it’s almost holiday season and that means time with the fam, some much needed relaxation and, of course, food. However, with all of Mom’s fantastic cooking of course come some unwanted weight and with it being too cold to even stand outside let alone run or walk, the gym will soon become the only option. For some reason, girls have been brought up to think the gym is a scary place and that lifting weights are too masculine. Fear not! Here is your easy guide to hitting the gym and looking like a pro!

1. JUST DO IT!

This is the most basic rule I can think of. You will never do anything until you do it. The best advice I can give you is that no one is judging you at the gym! Everyone at the gym is either focused on their own reps and too involved with themselves or too worried about other people judging them to worry about you. Plus, people are probably just looking at your cute butt anyway! If you’re super nervous, try using the cardio machines first and then graduate to the weights. UR has such a nice facility so why not use it???

2. Do your research

Ok, I know that this kind of contradicts my last rule but it is always best to go to the gym with a plan in mind. Doing a little research before hand and figuring out what parts of your body you want to work and what kinds of exercises can work those parts is imperative. In addition, you want to make sure that you are doing each exercise correctly so as to not hurt your beautiful self! If you are stuck there are tons of exercise regimes online and there are even some in the gym! Remember, make sure you spend more time doing than planning and you set reasonable goals!

3. Find a buddy

Working out with someone else can be more fun than working out alone! Having your bff there to motivate you is always the best! However, knowing what you are looking for in a workout bae is very important. Are you looking for someone who is really serious and will push you or do you want someone to chat with? Does this person like to workout in the morning like you do or are they an night owl? Either way, having someone to help you and spot you at the gym is ideal and will help you go on a continuous basis!

4. Eat!

You have a metabolic window after working out where calorie intake is especially important. So, YOU NEED TO EAT AFTER YOUR WORKOUT!! Eating sugar and other carbs are the best so having a little candy or fruit is ideal. Keep some snacks in your gym bag for right after working out and make sure to drink plenty of water! Keeping your body happy will make sure all your hard work will not go to waste!

5. Relax and reward yourself

Soon after working out on a regular basis you will begin to feel better and see physical changes. Your endorphins will be flowing and you will feel great about yourself (not like you always shouldn’t, beauty!). Make sure you take a few minutes everyday for yourself to relax. Maybe take a meditation or yoga class or even just read a book for a few minutes a day! You are special, make sure to reward yourself!

Good luck working out this fall!
