Campus Celebrity: Audrey Yu

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rochester chapter.

This week’s campus celebrity is Audrey Yu! Audrey primarily, attends Eastman School of Music, but also takes classes at the River Campus. She majors in Oboe Performance and Music education, with a minor in Biology. I had so much fun interviewing her!

Birthday: January 11th

Hometown: East Amherst, New York

Advice to give incoming Freshmen: After thinking for a second she said “Take everything with an open mind. I had preconceived notions about certain subjects, but once I listened to the professors and understood their perspective of the subject I enjoyed these classes a lot.”She used her modern music classes as an example.

Favorite thing about University of Rochester: “The community is really nice, at Eastman in particular,  everyone really wants to help each other succeed.  Even with the competitive edge, people want to help each other.”

What is your campus involvement: An RA at Eastman, in Woodwind Ensemble, Eastman Harmine, Philharmonia, Empire Film Music Ensemble (she paused for a second here)…I like cats. “ It’s hard sometimes for Eastman students to connect to students on the River Campus. It is possible, but a better connections can be made.”

Dream Job: “Honestly, I really want to be in a position where I can help someone, either by playing in a professional orchestra, teaching oboe privately or in a college, or even in a bakery!”

Life motto: “ I have two! ‘See the sun before the clouds’ (A six word poem of her own creation) and ‘ALWAYS say you’ll play Bass drum for the postman’- Richard Killmer”

Favorite off campus eat: Jay’s Diner

Favorite Dessert: Fruit

My name is Madeline and I am freshman at the University of Rochester. I row on the crew team and am planning on a double major in neuroscience and women's studies on a pre-med track. I am also involved with the Eco-Reps on campus and I love to read and play the piano.
