5 Ways University of Rochester has Been Awesome this Past Year

It is not hard to deny that we go to an amazing school. But, how amazing is it actually? This past year alone, our school has been in the media for everything from cool technological advancements to awesome musical performances. Here are just some of the ways that University of Rochester beats all the rest.

1. Apple talks about UR

Apple executives just released information about a new iPhone mobile app, which will allow patients with Parkinson’s disease to track their symptoms and share this information with researchers and doctors at their semi-annual product launch event this year. The app, known as mPower, was in partnership with Dorsey and Karl Kieburtz, M.D., M.P.H. from the University of Rochester, and Max Little, Ph.D., a mathematician and lecturer at Aston University in the United Kingdom. Now Parkinson’s patients can get the help that they need in real time.

2. New Self-Stretching Material Made

I’m sure you have heard of the “water resistant material, but have you heard of the new self-stretching material produced by Mitchell Anthamatten (an associate professor of chemical engineering at the University)? Although most materials expand while heated, this rubber-like material will revert back to its original shape without any physical manipulation. Another cool thing is that two students of Anthamatten’s helped him on this project!

3.University Launches Center for Renewable Energy

Not only is UR in national news, but it is also in local news. As of March 23rd, more than 15 academic departments will be working together to create the Center for Energy and Environment. The aim of this group is to understand the impacts of energy technologies on human health and the environment. For example, they will study toxicology reports of new renewable energy sources. This is a cool way the University is combining a lot of resources to make a change.

4. Eastman Alumni Composes for “House of Cards”

The hit Netflix series “House of Cards”, (which is a total must see, by the way!) just released its third season and Eastman alumni Jeff Beal is a composer. Among the many other Eastman alumni that have won Grammy’s and other awards, Beal “has composed music for each of the hour-long episodes without the help of any assistants or orchestrators. He also plays all of the trumpet, piano and guitar parts himself and records a 17-piece string ensemble in the living room of his house in Agoura Hills, California.”

5. Invisibility Coat

And last, but certainly not least, the University has worked to create a device that gives the illusion of invisibility at different angles. The light passes around the object, making it seem like it isn’t there at all. But the best part of this story, there is a Buzzfeed article about it!
