Hey there, collegiettes. I’m here to convince you that Rochester is not boring.

This year we are starting a new monthly feature called “Things to Do This Month” to get you out and about in Rochester! In addition to our regular events section, “Things to Do This Month” will focus more on off-campus events.  

There’s a lot going on this September. See what we’ve found for you below…

 

Thinkin’ & Drinkin’: The Bug Jar’s Trivia Hour / Manic Monday Retro Dance

When: Monday, Sept. 7. Trivia begins at 8pm, Retro Dance at 10pm. FREE PIZZA at 11pm!

Where: The Bug Jar

Cost: Free

Retro? Dancing? Free? Um, yes? If you’ve never been to the Bug Jar, you should check out this hip, quirky bar with live music and great drink specials. And who can pass up FREE PIZZA?!

 

PiYo Live

When: Every Thursday @ 6:30pm

Where: NU MOVEMENT

Cost: First class $5; Classes after $10; Every time you bring a friend it’s $5 for both of you

Like pilates? Like yoga? PiYo Live combines both! It’s an exercise designed to improve your flexibility and balance and strengthen your core.

 

Oktoberfest

When: Sept 11-12 & Sept 18-19

Where: Camp Eastman, Irondequoit

Cost: $8 (only $4 Sept 18 from noon-3pm)

Enjoy authentic German food, music and dancing, vendors and activities in a huge, one-acre tent. 

 

Fringe Festival

When: Sept. 17-26

Where: Various locations in Rochester

Cost: Many shows are FREE, ticket prices $25 and under

This 10-day visual and performing arts festival always gets rave reviews–last year over 60,000 attended! Check their website for more details about performancess and exhibitions. All outdoor shows on Gibbs Street (take the Orange Line to Eastman) are free! 

 

Blue Velvet at The Little Theater

When: Sept 18 @ 10pm

Where: The Little Theater, 240 East Ave

Cost: $5

As part of their Mondo Movie Series, the Little is offering a Special One-Time Screening of David Lynch’s 1986 acclaimed neo-noir cult film Blue Velvet. The Little also regularly screens American independent and foreign films and hosts visual art and music events. 

 

Panic! At the Disco

Where: Main Street Armory

Cost: $35 – $40

 

Artist Row at the Rochester Public Market

When: Sun Sept. 20, 9am – 4pm

Where: Rochester Public Market (take the Green Line)

Cost: FREE

Support local art! This event will feature the work of over 180 community artists as well as plenty of food, music, and dance performances. If you’ve never been to the Public Market, head over now while the weather is still nice. It’s open year-round and features hundred of food vendors, breweries, florists, etc. Two words: free samples! 

 

Tequila Tasting Class

Vintage Drive-In Movies

When: opens Mon-Thurs @ 8pm, Fri-Sun @ 7pm

Where: 1520 W Henrietta Rd, Avon, NY (about 18 minutes from campus by car)

Cost: $9 per ticket

Perfect for date nights. They also have a large, affordable menu: hamburgers for $3.79, wings $5.99, etc. (That’s cheaper than the pit…)
