Things I’ll Miss at Rhodes: Rat Breakfast

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rhodes chapter.

The “Things I’ll Miss” Series

Chapter 1: Rat Breakfast

Once you get over the curious name, you find yourself trapezing to the Rat for every single meal during Welcome Week as a wide-eyed, innocent freshman, seeking nourishment and community. A couple weeks in—or a couple days—you may realize the Rat isn’t for you…at least for some meals. But I think most everyone can agree that Rat breakfast is something given to us by the Breakfast Gods themselves.

As graduation looms close for old ancient souls like me, you begin to look around Rhodes and start appreciating the things you know you’ll yearn for when you begin your stint in the real world. One of these things for me is Rat breakfast.

Sure, the omelet line is always long. 9:30 is always rush hour, and coincidentally the earliest I can drag myself out of bed. Sometimes the hash browns take different geometric forms and sometimes every coffee pot is devastatingly empty. But nothing will ever replace Ms. Laverne’s eggs, the odd assortment of muffin flavors and pastries, or the glory that is Rat cheese grits. Whether the sausage are links or patties, whether the biscuits are hard or soft, and whether the Rat is out of the honey-roasted peanut butter or not, my heart is always content in the Rat during breakfast time.

Rat breakfast, you will be missed.

Hi! I'm Nathalie Vacheron, a senior at Rhodes hailing from Germantown, Tennessee. I love to write, I love to edit, and I'm in love with the voice Her Campus gives to women across college campuses. In addition to Her Campus, I'm involved in my sorority, Tri Delta, work in the Counseling/Health Center, am a First Year mentor, and love to run when I can. I'm a Business & Commerce major concentrating in management with a minor in Psychology. I hope to go into health administration, community health, or work for a non-profit (and write a book somewhere in-between...) xoxo
