Why You NEED to Spend a Summer in Memphis

By Kendra Lyons
September 11, 2012 - 1:00am

As Rhodes girls, we are bred to continuously hunt for internships or study abroad programs that will challenge our current perspectives of the world (and hopefully dazzle future employers). Before you try to broaden your horizons though, it is equally beneficial to submerge yourself in the distinctive city that we already live in. It takes time to fully appreciate Memphis because it lacks a sole identity. Instead, it envelopes a culture defined by a mixture of influences, reflected in its diverse population, wide range of ethnic and local cuisines, and mesh of jazz, rock and folk music you can hear walking downtown on a given day. Here are the top reasons why finding a summer job in Memphis should be on every Rhodes girl’s bucket list before graduation...

TPM (Total Pinterest Move)

Yes, that’s right: “Pinterest” has become an adjective.  Don’t tell me that you haven’t looked at a handmade tote bag, floating candle centerpieces or low-fat double chocolate chip cranberry gooey cookie bars without thinking, “That’s SO Pinterest!”  If you haven’t, it’s probably because you haven’t been on the Internet for over a year.  So let me catch you up on the latest phenomenon taking over the computer, vocabulary and free time of women everywhere.

Apps You Should Be Able to Live Without, But Can’t

By Emily Krone
April 16, 2012 - 7:05pm

One of the most distressing situations for a college student is not writing a paper ten minutes before it is due or losing your LynxCard; it’s being phoneless for even just a few hours.  We feel lost and out of touch when we can’t be in constant contact with friends and family, and for most phone addicts, our phones are so much more than our primary mode of communication.  Without my iPhone, I wouldn’t know when my laundry is done, the amount of money in my bank account, or how drive home for Easter break.  Basically, I would be broke and wandering along I-55 in dirty clothes.  Phones are no longer a basic method of communication; we depend on them to help us with simple, daily tasks.

By Sarah Mason
March 31, 2012 - 3:25pm

I never had a dream or a goal to do a half-marathon. My thinking was more, “That would be a cool thing to do before I graduate.” But if you do have that goal, or if you even think it would just be cool to do – go for it. You can do it. I promise. With just a little determination and a lot of perseverance – you can do it.

By Emily Clark
March 18, 2012 - 10:41am

With the weather warming and nostalgia beginning its steady creep, seniors start to panic. Yes, they panic about graduation, and interviews, and job opportunities. They panic about housing and internships and business attire and things this naïve freshman writer cannot even begin to imagine. Yet, most importantly, they begin to panic about leaving. Not just Rhodes, but Memphis as a whole. In a sudden moment of fear, they may realize they still have not been to Graceland. Or, while they rode the Lynx, did they ever ride a Mississippi riverboat? And after graduation, will they ever have the opportunity again?

Tea Time: Breaking the Coffee Routine

By Emily Clark
March 4, 2012 - 11:09am

In college, coffee is as common as laptops or slices of pizza. It’s ingested as a necessity: a means to finish that midterm study guide or to provide enough motivation to attend your 9:00 AM class Monday morning after fun, but not-so-productive weekend. I fall victim to the convenient beverage just as often as anyone else. Late night in the library? Middle Ground. Morning presentation? You better believe coffee from the Rat is gracing my travel mug. If I ever drive past a Starbucks, I’m a goner.
