"The Searing Veil" - Oliver Haynes' Road to AuthorshipBy April 1, 2013 - 12:47am Of all the things we hope to accomplish during our college career, few of us are likely to have ‘write a book’ at the top of our to do list. Oliver Haynes, on the other hand, has been devoted to completing his book, “The Searing Veil,” since he was a Senior in High School. He began writing the novel when he was just eighteen years old after he helped start a writing club at his school. Here, he wrote a short story that was based around an eccentric character who wore a hat and a moon mask. Haynes couldn’t seem to shake the idea and the story continued to develop in his mind, so he continued to write. READ MORE |

Rachel Schmelzer: Bringing Relay to Rhodes, and Goals for the FutureBy March 24, 2013 - 8:56am At Rhodes College, it’s easy to catch the community service bug. From Bonner to Kinney, Special Olympics to Rites to Play, Greek events to club bake sales, you can hardly turn a corner without finding a way to give back. But last year, junior Rachel Schmelzer took volunteerism and community service to a whole new level. She didn’t just bake cookies, or fundraise. Instead, Rachel started Relay for Life at Rhodes, involved nearly 1/8 of the student body, and raised over $15,000 for cancer research. Not bad for someone who’s also involved in Greek life, works for the football team, and volunteers at Church Health Center! READ MORE |

One-of-a-Kind Style for the "Cool Kids": Teeze by MoniqueBy October 18, 2012 - 12:59am Monique Hagler has always had an artistic streak, though it wasn’t until a few months ago that she transformed this passion into a business. The sophomore from Nashville, TN created the t-shirt line Teeze this summer, reaching out to audiences of “cool kids” who want “stuff you couldn’t find at stores.” Each shirt or tank is made-to-order, hand-printed and completely one-of-a-kind. Hagler first learned to screen-print in high school, primarily so she could make shirts to wear herself. It was actually her art teacher, Rosie Paschall, who taught her each step of what she calls a “tedious” process. While Hagler had always been more of a painter, and still enjoys oil painting, silkscreen printing offered an alternative creative outlet.... |
