Culinary Chronicles Summer Drink Series: Mint Simple Syrup

When temperatures get into the hundreds (yes, Baltimore is that hot) even the most refreshing drink can't make me sit outside. Instead, I'm watching a Real Housewives of Beverly Hills marathon and flipping through Bon Appetit magazine. In their June issue, they feature a "Summer Cooking Manifesto" containing 21 laws, with #18 being "simple syrup is liquid gold." I absolutely, 100% agree with that statement and always keep a jar of it around the house. It can be added to anything -- drinks, sorbet, ice pops -- and it's incredibly easy to make. This summer I started making it with mint, and now it doesn't just add sweetness, it adds a boost in flavor, too! READ MORE...

Culinary Chronicles Summer Drink Series: Cucumber Infused Vodka

By Megan Hauver
June 6, 2011 - 6:23pm

My idea of a perfect summer day is sitting by the pool with my Kindle loaded with summer reads while sipping on an ice cold drink. That drink has to include at least one of the two most refreshing ingredients: cucumber and mint. In most recipes, these ingredients are used one way, cucumber is a garnish and mint is muddled, but there are two different ways you can prepare these ingredients so they are drink-ready whenever you need them! Shape-Up Rhodes: Stress Relieving Health Tips for Final Exams

By Annie Herman
April 27, 2011 - 1:02pm

1.     Wake up early and take a 30-minute walk before studying- this will be a great stress reliever and will help you to focus better on your studying!
2.     When all else fails, take a nap.  You deserve it!  Your body is worn out and if you’re unable to focus from insomnia, taking a nap is your best bet.  Do not take more than a 2-hour nap.  It will mess up your sleep schedule big time. 3.     If it’s nice outside, go for a jog around campus.  Get some of your friends together over the weekend and plan a 30-minute time slot to go on a group run! Culinary Chronicles: Easter Brunch

By Megan Hauver
April 19, 2011 - 10:18pm

My three favorite things about Easter are dying Easter eggs, the pretty pastels that everyone wears, and, of course, Easter brunch.  I especially love cooking at home because I have more space and better tools (mixers, pots and pans, etc.) than I do at school. It can be harder to cook at home, too; I have two brothers, and they can be pretty picky eaters. I always have to work a little harder to find something that everyone in my family can eat and enjoy. With Easter break only a day away, I finally decided on a brunch that I can enjoy, and that my entire family will love! This break, spread the Easter cheer and make chicken, avocado, and cherry tomato omelettes, some vegan blueberry cinnamon French toast, and Bellini cocktails for a meal everybody will...

Cereal is a go-to food for breakfast and daytime snacking.  If you’re addicted to Reese’s Puffs, Cookie Crisp, or any of those sugary cereals you enjoyed as a kid, you’re in luck.  You can still enjoy cereals similar to your favorite childhood snacks with less sugar and some added protein and fiber.  Rev up your grocery list with these cereal swaps. If you like Cinnamon Toast Crunch, try Kellogg’s Fiber Plus Antioxidants Cinnamon Oat Crunch.  It tastes even better and has 8 more grams of fiber than Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

Culinary Chronicles: Bazooka Joe Shooters

By Megan Hauver
April 11, 2011 - 9:09pm

My last recipe, ice cream Jell-O, was in the spirit of Rites to Play- an event that is sandwiched between two nights of concerts. Rites of Spring is usually one of the best weekends on campus, and I wanted to pick a recipe that is as fun as Rites of Spring, but keeps the spirit of Rites to Play in mind. My boyfriend works as a bartender during the summer, and as I was trying to pick a new recipe, he introduced me to the Bazooka Joe shooter. READ MORE
