Love is given to us by God, and as humans, we express it in many different ways. There is love for family, love for friends, love for God and yes: even self-love. They are all important. Valentine’s Day in the U.S. has come to be a day where couples celebrate their love by giving gifts and going out to dinner. But true love is found in the daily menial tasks that often get overlooked.
Love is found when you need someone to turn to in your darkest hour and they are there. Love is found in the person who does your laundry, cleans your house and cooks your meals without a word. Love is found in the friend who sends you a text saying they’re thinking about you. Love is the person who you can call at three in the morning for life advice. Do not take for granted the love of your family and friends.
This past Valentine’s Day, if you felt lonely or spurned by someone (even just a friend), remember that God’s love transcends all. He loves us without asking for anything in return. Unlike people who will hurt you and mistreat you, God never will. People will eventually disappoint us, even if it is unintentional. We’ve all been hurt by someone before. If God can forgive us for the millions of things we do wrong, the least we can do is forgive the person who has wronged us, no matter what they’ve done. Once we’ve forgiven them, we should continue to love them with Christ-like love, even if they continue to disappoint us. In God’s eyes, we act like failures every day too, so no matter what others might do to you, shake it off and wish them well. On Valentine’s Day, and each and every day in between, I would encourage you to think about the unending love and forgiveness we receive from God.
