Why I Support Net Neutrality and You Should Too

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Quinnipiac chapter.

As of Thursday, December 14th, the Federal Communications Committee (FCC) repealed Net Neutrality. For those who don’t have a clear understanding of Net Neutrality, it is the banning of internet service providers from blocking, slowing, and adding additional charges on particular websites and applications. Net Neutrality is the reason why we are able to have a free and open experience on the web. With it being banned, there will be slower servers, and fees on popular applications that you enjoy such as Instagram, Twitter, Netflix, and so much more: basically everything you have free daily access to. Tech companies and ISPs will take control and lanes will become slow and problematic from then on.

The Net Neutrality repeal is also silencing women, people of color, the LBGTQ+ community and any other marginalized groups. Why? The content these ISPs don’t like can easily be taken down. That means videos, images, and even organizational sites from underrepresented voices such as women, POC, etc.

This still has to go through Congress, so there is STILL time.
