The Pros and Cons of Living on York Hill

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Quinnipiac chapter.

They say “life is better on the Hill,” and while living on York Hill is definitely nice, there are some daily struggles we all encounter as residents there.  Here are what I consider to be the most relevant pros and cons about living on the York Hill campus:

Pros:

·      York Hill is a beautiful campus with breathtaking views and beautiful buildings.  When I sit and study in the cafeteria, I always enjoy the view of the mountains.  I can see what’s ahead of me for miles.

·      The food at the York Hill café is substantially better than the food at Café Q on main campus.  There are plenty of fresh options to choose from, including their famous make-your-own pizza and sandwich station.  A new convenience store was also placed into the cafeteria, which is especially handy.

·      Everything is in the student center (a.k.a. Rocky Top), including Residential Life, the post office for upperclassmen, the cafeteria, and the fitness center.  Rocky Top also has air conditioning, so it can be a nice escape from the hot, stuffy dorm rooms.

·      When hockey and basketball season are upon us, the arena is within walking distance from the dorms.  This means residents have a better chance of getting a quality seat for the games, ahead of the freshmen and sophomores taking the shuttles.

Cons:

·      If you are like myself and don’t have a car on campus, you have to rely on the shuttles.  They have been timely these past few weeks, but once the colder weather approaches, it is not going to be fun waiting for the shuttles to climb up the Hill.

·      I have heard from those who do have cars that there are limited parking options on York.  I think that it is unreasonable for Public Safety to limit where students can park, especially since there is so much parking available, from the big garage to the lots outside of the sports arena.

·      Except for Eastview, there is little to no airflow in the dorms on York.  I understand that Eastview is senior housing, but unless the goal is to make students suffocate or die from heat exhaustion, I think it is important for central airflow to be in place.  The dorms are relatively new; I don’t understand why there is not central air.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy York Hill life so far, but as with everything in life, there are negative aspects that I could do without.  “Life is better on the Hill”, but “there is always room for improvement on the Hill.”
