NY State of Mind: Don’t Let Yourself Get “Jerked” Around!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Quinnipiac chapter.

Noah Puckerman, Glee’s favorite bad boy, said it best,  “The thing about chicks is that you only have to be a fraction as nice to them as you were mean to them to get them to like you again.”  When I first saw this quote, I laughed and said he’s right. But as I continued to look around, it became obvious. Women crave to be with men who are rude to them.  Even if they say the meanest things, women look to be with men who are rude to them.  It begs me to ask the question, why?

For some reason some women love to be with the jerk.  Not all women fall into the trap. Some of you are smart and get away, however others aren’t so lucky. The unlucky ones seem to believe they have the power a changing an ill-mannered man.  It’s almost as though we feel we’re going to be the one to suddenly make them into the charming and faithful Edward Cullen-esque type. They seem to know all the right things to say to your face, or how to formulate a text to have just enough information to make you a mixture of annoyed with the longing urge to go see them again. And honestly, I don’t know how they do it.
Attention is also a leading factor when it comes to the male method of madness.  Men say things purposely to get you not only annoyed, but also to keep you interested.  The mean things they say make you think, and in the end they win.  While they are out there flirting away and meeting other people, you’re secretly still thinking about what they said, and looking for ways to talk to them again in hopes of getting an explanation.
The worst form of these deadly predators is those who have mastered the ability to manipulate a text message.  Knowing that they have all the time in the world to respond, they strategically plan out exactly what they’re going to say and when to send it.  Very rarely will they send quick responses and sometimes they don’t even respond at all, leaving you even more intrigued and angry, and giving them even more power over you.
Men launch full out campaigns to win our attention. If they didn’t the human race would be dead and all animal instincts would be non-existent. But on a campus like this where there are so few men, especially good men, competition increases and many of us settle for the jerk who treats you horribly and but still successfully captures your attention and  emotions. However, it’s not the proper solution.
Don’t sell yourself out just because there are such a limited number of guys in the Quinnipiac student body.  Just because he has a pair of beautiful eyes, a nice bod and even a somewhat good personality (when he wants too) don’t let the charm fool you.  Take control and make him come to you.  Show Puck that us women are completely predictable and we do need some form of flattery and proper treatment to be in a great relationship. In order for get back together with a man, or be with the man you’re currently with, make them treat you right.  And if they don’t…tell them don’t let the door hit them on the way out of your life. But if it does hit them, that might be even better!
