Noteworthy LGBTQ Songs and Artists

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Quinnipiac chapter.

As a lot of people may know, a lot of new LGBTQ songs, movies, tv shows and music has been coming out in the past few years, giving the community the representation, it deserves and allowing for LGBTQ youth to relate to the songs and not feel so alone about their sexuality. The songs also allow for them to have some hope with whatever they are going through and shed some light on the darkness that surrounds them. Also, all the songs on this list are catchy as f**k.

1. Curious by Hayley Kiyoko

If you already don’t know who Hayley Kiyoko is, then you are in for a treat. Hayley directs her own videos and writes her own music. Plus, she is a bisexual singer and her dancing skills are always on point. The song talks about dating a bi- curious girl who leaves you for a guy. As the lyrics go, “I’m just curious, is it serious?” But that is my interpretation of the song and everyone who listens to the song has their own interpretation of what the song is about. With a catchy beat, great choreography and a great setting, it really makes you constantly what to blast the song through your speakers.

2. Feelings by Hayley Kiyoko

Another Hayley Kiyoko song, really? Yes, I’m adding another Hayley Kiyoko song to this list. Not only did this video and song come out last year, but Hayley directed the whole thing in one take plus it’s pretty catchy to listen to. Add Hayley and her friends pulling up in a kick*** jeep and her awesome dance moves, yet again and you got yourself a bomb *** video that makes you instantly want to get up and dance. The song describes all the highs and lows of having feelings for a girl. While the video itself shows Hayley following a girl down the street like a guy would, it makes it even more interesting to watch.

3.  Sleepover by Hayley Kiyoko

Really dude? Three songs by the same artist. I swear I’m done using her on this list. This song was one of the first songs I listened to after coming out to my family as gay. The song literally makes me cry every time I listen to it. It’s not only catchy but it’s relatable. Hayley describes being in love with someone who only wants to be friends, but she only has her in her head. The song makes you not only want to jam but anyone who has fallen in love with someone who doesn’t feel the same or even their best friend, can relate to this song on a spiritual level.

4. She likes girls by Metro Station

This song I recently discovered on YouTube and then I realized how catchy it is. The song itself describes liking a girl while being too scared to confess their feelings to the other girl.  In the video, a guy is getting dumped by his girlfriend, who happens to be a lesbian and he’s so chill about it, which makes this video even better. The song is not only catchy but it’s two guys singing about lesbians. What’s better than that?

5. Green Liner Killer by See

This song is by another artist that should be getting more recognition for her songs. The video itself shows a lesbian couple camping and getting attacked by a pink furry monster who wants to eat the marshmallows that have brought along with them. The song is not only catchy but it’s a nice, funny change to the videos that SEE herself, usually creates, while giving you a cute and funny video to watch.

6. In love with a straight girl by Ally Hills

One of my favorite lesbian you tubers/ musicians who happens to write her own music produced this amazing and catchy song that means exactly as the title says. The song itself is about falling in love with a straight girl/ or guy depending on your gender and sexuality. Ally Hills video itself stars Stevie Boebi as the lesbian who falls for her straight best friend, who is Ally Hills. If you like a catchy song that will make you laugh and seeing Ally Hills in long socks and a t-shirt being covered in pillow feathers, while eating pringles, this video is for you.

7. Strangers by Halsey and Lauren Jauregui

This one goes out to all the people who are bisexual. A year ago, Halsey and Lauren Jauregui, two bisexual artists collaborated to create this gay anthem that is catchy as f***k.

The song itself has many different meanings but to me it describes the feeling after a relationship ends. You are no longer lovers, but you are like strangers, it is as if you have never met. If you like pop music and love these two artists, then you will definitely love this song.

8. Gravel to my Tempo by Hayley Kiyoko

Yes, I added another Hayley Kiyoko song. All these songs are off of my very gay playlist that I listen to in the car or during very long road trips or car rides. This song is about what it’s like to be gay in high school and having a crush on a girl or a guy, depending on your sexuality and gender and dealing with your sexuality. If you love listening to catchy pop songs and adore Hayley Kiyoko’s killer dance moves, then this song and music video are for you.

9. I’m coming out by Diana Ross (1980)

This song is at the bottom of this list because it is a very old song. But it fits very well to the LGBTQ community. The song was originally telling people to be themselves but since the song fit so well to the community, the community adopted it and embraced the song. Even including it in shows such as “One day at a time” or even by playing it a pride event. If you want something catchy to celebrate being who you are, then this song is for you.

10.  Same love by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis

This song seems not get a lot of rep then when it first came out when I was growing up.  When I first listened to this, I wasn’t out and I started crying while listening to this. The song taught me that being different was ok, even though other people would judge and hate me for being who I actually was. If you aren’t out or being bullied for being LGBTQ, please not only seek help but listen to this song. It helped me feel better about myself and who I was and I bet you will feel the same after listening to this. Just know that you are loved and cared about. Be strong and love yourself because you are unique and different even if you like girls, or boys.

Much love.
